Berkshire Health Systems has exclusively retained AMN Healthcare to lead a national search to recruit the next System Vice President, Chief Operating Officer of Berkshire Medical Center (BMC) located in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. This will be the lead executive of the hospital reporting to the CEO of Berkshires Health Systems.

The Opportunity:

Berkshire Medical Center and Berkshire Health Systems (BHS) are seeking an accomplished, results-oriented healthcare executive to serve as System Vice President (SVP) and Chief Operating Officer (COO) for Berkshire Medical Center, a 298 bed, $520M in net revenue in FY 23, community teaching hospital and the flagship hospital for the system. This is an exciting opportunity to lead the operations of a healthy, vibrant and high-quality community teaching hospital with a strong reputation and history of delivering high quality health care services. It is also an opportunity to help ensure the residents of Pittsfield and across the Berkshire area continue to receive high quality care from the local health system and to advance population health initiatives in the region.

The SVP/COO reports to the CEO and President of Berkshire Health Systems and provides the leadership, strategic guidance, and management direction necessary to fulfill the organization’s mission. The SVP/COO, Berkshire Medical Center is responsible for planning, organizing, leading, and managing BMC operations in order to support the achievement of the system’s mission, strategies, and operating plans, and to collaborate with BHS to represent Berkshire Medical Center and BHS to the local community to support positive community relations, philanthropy, and government relations. The SVP/COO is responsible for implementing the BHS strategic plan at the local level and for achieving the Berkshire Medical Center operating goals that align with the systemwide strategic plan. Transparency, visibility, and consistent communication will be hallmarks of the new SVP/COO.

The Ideal Candidate:

Ten years of progressive healthcare leadership experience, including experience as the executive responsible for the operations of a hospital, or a large service line within a health system that includes significant hospital operations.

The successful candidate will currently be a President, Chief Operating Officer, SVP/VP of Operations, or hold another senior executive-level position in a healthcare provider organization with a reputation for excellence.

Operational leadership gained within a community hospital environment is ideal.

Experience in a teaching hospital setting is preferred.

Experience in a multi-hospital health system is preferred; must have an appreciation for the strengths and challenges that a system brings to a local organization.

Track record of developing effective, trusting relationships with providers is critical.

A master’s degree in healthcare administration, Business Administration or a related field is required. FACHE is preferred.

The Organization:

Berkshire Medical Center (BMC) is a 298-bed community teaching hospital and the flagship hospital of Berkshire Health Systems (BHS). BMC offers a full continuum of medical specialties, advanced technologies for lab and imaging, and state-of-the-art surgical facilities, including orthopedic surgery, cancer care, behavioral health/substance use disorder treatment, general surgery, urology, obstetrics and gynecology, neurosurgery, cardiology, and gastroenterology. BMC is a Level III Trauma Center and maintains major clinical partnerships with Baystate Health, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Mass General Brigham. BMC operates three independent residency programs in medicine, surgery, and psychiatry and is an affiliate of the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School, the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Boston University.

Berkshire Medical Center's Hillcrest Campus, the former Hillcrest Hospital, is located in Pittsfield and is home to a variety of BMC services and programs including the BMC Cancer and Infusion Center, the inaugural member of the Dana-Farber Cancer Care Collaborative. The Hillcrest Campus is also home to BMC’s home care agency, Berkshire VNA.

Permanent housing options in the Berkshires are diverse and surprisingly affordable relative to the more urban/suburban regions of New England and greater New York area. A variety of excellent public and private schools are available in the region.
