Position Title: Middle School Dean of Student LifeReports to: Head of Middle SchoolFLSA Status: ExemptEmployment Status: Full-time, 11 monthsStart Date: July 1, 2024POSITION DESCRIPTIONThe Middle School Dean of Student Life should be an enthusiastic, student-centered educator who collaborates with the leadership of the Middle School and is responsible for continuing and developing a vibrant student life program. Responsibilities include overseeing expectations for student conduct, supporting Middle School faculty in the academic and character development of students, and managing communication with Middle School students and parents. The Dean of Student Life should be confident in interactions with teachers and parents, discrete with sound judgment, and an excellent communicator. While serving and leading in the Middle School, the Dean should model ethical and professional behavior and demonstrate a commitment to the school, its mission, and its policies.QUALIFYING CHARACTERISTICSThe ideal candidate will have substantive teaching and leadership experience with Middle School students. The candidate should possess excellent verbal and written communication skills with an eye for detail and clarity, have demonstrated leadership, highlighted by a willingness to listen first, build consensus, and work in collaborative partnerships across all groups. The ideal candidate will also have the ability to work toward the resolution of all problems—both routine and unique—and a willingness to be part of the process of making difficult decisions. In addition, the ideal candidate will possess exceptional organizational skills tempered with flexibility, adaptability, and a good sense of humor.ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIESServe as an engaging leader in the Middle School, responsible for aspects of the day-to-day operation in alignment with the School’s mission and vision.Foster and model a code of conduct that reflects Walker’s standing as a school of honor where “doing the right thing” is a core concept.Create and sustain an environment that nurtures the healthy development of students in partnership with the faculty and administrative support team.Lead the development and implementation of a vibrant student life program, including supporting and guiding the grade level deans and club/organization sponsors in planning student activities, planning weekly Middle School assemblies, coordinating special programs, and managing the student activities budget.Serve as the faculty sponsor for the Student Leadership Club.Promote established guidelines for proper school conduct and dress; collaborate with faculty to maintain student discipline consistent with school policies; maintain accurate discipline records; and lead yearly reviews of student-focused policies in our Handbook.Regularly communicate with parents regarding student issues and concerns; manage regular communication systems with students and families.Serve as a support consultant to teachers in matters of classroom management, teaching methods, meeting student and parent needs, and coordinating general student supervision.Work with the Counselors and Grade Level Deans to lead the Middle School Advisory program.Be a visible presence in all areas of the school and a point of contact for families and faculty regarding student life.Collaborate in planning and executing external admission and transition events; assist in the admission process for interviewing and evaluating applicants for enrollment.Serve as a member of the Middle School Administrative Team and Middle/Upper School Academic Council; collaborate with the Head of Middle School in leading Middle School faculty meetings.Represent the Middle School and stand in for the Head of Middle School at a variety of events, initiatives, and committees as needed.Teach one to two classes and serve as a Middle School advisor.The ideal candidate must possess a Bachelor’s Degree, although an advanced degree in a teaching subject area or educational leadership is preferred.SCHOOL DESCRIPTIONThe Walker School is a leader among independent schools in the metro Atlanta area and has long been recognized for its first-rate academic program, close relationships between students and faculty, and abundant opportunities for students to engage in meaningful experiences both in and out of the classroom.
