The Senior Director of Communications

provides leadership and direction to DUHS clinical entities on strategic internal communications operations (planning and implementation), to include social media, brand communications, business continuity communications, employee engagement, community outreach and organizational change management. This position sits at and serves as the primary senior communicator for Duke University Hospital, a 1,000+ bed hospital that employs more than 11,000 team members.As a member of the DUHS marketing and communications team reporting to the AVP of Communications, the senior director plays an important role in sharing our Duke Health story and bringing our commitment to compassionate care to life across multiple audiences, stakeholder groups, community partnerships and channels.Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Develop, direct and implement communications strategies for Duke University Hospital. Serve as a close advisor to the Group President of Acute Care Services and provide strategic communications counsel to the Duke University Hospital Senior Leadership Team on hospital initiatives and key priorities.Responsible for building out internal communication channels that support the hearts and minds of team members across a spectrum of job classifications and role responsibilities; channels include social media, newsletters, leader messaging, town halls, videos, digital content, and others.Direct and supervise systemwide clinical communications team to effectively align processes and content management strategy.Direct the creative and production aspects of all audio, video, and written forms of communication for Duke University Hospital. Develop and coordinate the production and dissemination of information pertinent to Duke University Hospital leadership and staff through various media.In partnership with the communications leadership team, direct content planning, cadence and channels to ensure messaging is consistent and distributed to the right audience, in the right channel, at the right time.Represent Duke University Hospital communication strategies with Duke University Health System communication leaders.Writes, edits, reviews and enhances communications materials including presentations, Intranet content, newsletters, video scripts, and executive messaging.Provide communication leadership with hospital leaders during severe weather and emergency events.Provide coaching, career development, and creative resources for entity communicators through influence and collaboration in a direct report and dotted-line organizational structure.Work in collaboration with entity and university colleagues, partners, and stakeholders to ensure an integrated, effective approach across all communications strategies, plans, and deliverables.Serve on various committees and attend professional meetings as appropriate to help gather content to better tell the Duke University Health System story.Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.Minimum QualificationsEducationWork requires communication, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor’s degree program in Journalism, Communications, English or a related discipline. A Master’s degree or commensurate experience in healthcare or community-based organizations is preferred.ExperienceWork requires six years’ experience in writing, public relations, communications or a related discipline to include a minimum of two years experience in the health care field. Additional experience in social media management and campaigns required.OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCEDegrees, Licensures, CertificationsAccredited in Public Relations preferred.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Excellent writing, communication, and presentation skills are a must. Must be highly organized and show attention to detail. Ability to inspire confidence, earn trust, and collaborate in a way that builds stakeholder relationships supporting communications campaign implementation. Ability to craft successful social media strategy and content as aligned with the broader health system direction to create engaging employee experiences.
