Serves as assistant to the District Attorney and handles misdemeanor caseload with the opportunity to take on some felony cases after gaining experience in the office. Performs professional legal work in the investigation, preparation and presentation of the cases prosecuted by the District Attorney.Essential Functions (in a typical work week)

:Handles a misdemeanor caseload which includes trials, motions, intakes, and other duties as assigned.Caseload focus includes, but is not limited to the prosecution of juvenile, assault, DUII, and game cases.Conducts complex legal research necessary for case preparation, to answer questions on current legal issues for local law enforcement agencies and the County Court.Prepares and presents cases for trial which includes reviewing the case, determining if the investigation is complete, interviewing and deselecting appropriate witnesses, conducting legal research, preparing witnesses to present testimony, conducting direct and cross-examination, and drafting legal documents.Performs intake procedures which includes reviewing incoming police reports and determining which charges, if any, will be filed and against whom on behalf of District Attorney.Negotiates potential case resolutions with defense counsel/defendants as appropriate and in accordance with facts, laws, and department policy.Prepares subpoenas, search warrants, and arrest warrants.Handles show cause hearings on probation violations.Drafts legal documents.On call to advise law enforcement offices, respond to crime scenes, and prepare search warrants.Attend Grand Jury pursuant to statute and prepare indictments as appropriate.Secondary Functions (in a typical work week)

:Interact with other lawyers representing a party other than defendant, such as crime victim or entity that is subject of subpoena.Teach and train law enforcement officers about changes in the law.Respond to public inquiries about specific cases.Engage with local, state, and federal law enforcement to coordinate criminal investigations and in their preparation as witnesses.Education, Experience, and Certification/Licensure

:Bachelor degree and Doctor of Jurisprudence degree.3-6 years of directly related experience in District Attorney, Public Defense, or equivalent.Current member in good standing of the Oregon State Bar.Ability to become CJIS (Criminal Justice Information Services) certified by completing the training and passing the certification process every two years.
