Job Summary

*Contract position will end one year from the date of hire and some onsite work required, out of state applicants welcome to apply.Amend at UCSF in the Division of Health Equity and Society seeks to hire a full-time Program Manager. Amend is led by experts in medicine, public health, and carceral practice reform. Amend partners with the Norwegian Correctional Service, colleagues from other European prison systems, U.S. community-based organizations, advocates working in the transformative justice space, and others to advance jail and prison reform centered on health and humanity. Our program leverages intensive correctional system policy review, correctional staff training, and prison staff mindset change to create measurably more humane and rehabilitation-focused jail and prison environments, to improve the health of incarcerated people and staff. The Amend program is multi-year, multi-faceted, and tailored to the unique needs and opportunities of each enrolled carceral system or facility. Amend is currently working intensively in approximately 20 prisons across 5 correctional systems.

The Program Manager will be assigned a broad spectrum of analytical, management, writing, curriculum/program development duties that will require knowledge and experience in the fields of criminal legal system and/or public policy and/or public health, as well as superb skills in writing, organization, and communication.

The successful administration of this program requires an ability to partner effectively with diverse stakeholders, including high-ranking appointed and elected government officials, correctional officers and their managers, and incarcerated people and their advocates. As a result, academic or applied grounding in social change movements and transformative justice, and/or deep knowledge of carceral systems work, and/or experience in training and moderating small groups are also critical.

The Program Manager must be able to collaboratively develop and implement innovative interventions and work closely with Amend colleagues in Impact and Design to ensure that Amend's impact is well-documented and broadly disseminated to advance reform beyond enrolled systems. Experience with designing and conducting robust program evaluations is a plus.

The Program Manager will be required to expand and formalize newly developed pilot initiatives within Amend's growing library of resources and products. Responsibilities include but are not limited to coordination of program administration timetables with corrections department personnel, content creation for ongoing program implementation, and developing new partnerships or expanding existing partnerships to replicate programs in new facilities. The Program Manager will be required to make frequent visits to participating prison facilities to ensure consistent, comprehensive, health-focused program delivery of Amend products. The position will also coordinate directly with Amend's Impact team to communicate program milestones to external audiences.

The Program Manager will assist in developing new models and methods for incorporating a greater diversity of professional experiences and subject matter expertise into Amend's training protocols.

Other tasks include:Implement new conceptual ideas and create work products for team-developed programs.Manage integration of innovative training concepts into existing programs.Develop and manage deadlines and activities as they relate to internal product hand-offs.Help assess program performance and integrate participant experience into product evolution.Those applying for this position must be:

Highly motivatedWell-organized and detail-orientedHave superb written and oral communication skills, as well as proficiency with computer programs such as Microsoft Word and Canva.The Program Manager will work closely with the Chief Program Officer, Director of Strategy & Innovation, and Senior Program Manager to ensure consistent coordination of adjacent and interdependent programming.

An essential focus of the position is to facilitate existing and new opportunities for peer leadership among a diverse range of stakeholders. This focus will afford the Program Manager the latitude to propose and develop new strategies to achieve program goals. As a result, a background or academic grounding in education, criminology, social ecology, and/or moderating small groups will be advantageous.

The Program Manager should expect to travel for approximately 60-80 days/year on an approximately monthly basis, primarily to partnering jails and prisons throughout the U.S. and internationally.

Finally, the Program Manager will assist with the presentation of the Amend program at a range of international and national forums

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.Your placement within the salary range is dependent on several factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. Department Description

The UCSF Division of Health Equity and Society (HES)at San Francisco General Hospital is part of the UCSF Department of Medicine. The Division of HES carries out innovative research to prevent and treat chronic disease in populations for whom social conditions often conspire to both promote various chronic diseases and make their management more challenging. The Division of HES is home to the Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative (BHHI) which provides accurate, timely policy-oriented research about homelessness for local, state, and national policymakers and practitioners. The Division is also home to Amend a public health and human rights-focused program that works in prisons and jails to reduce the debilitating health effects of these facilities on residents and staff alike, while simultaneously joining policymakers and community leaders to demand a better, new system of accountability and healing with human rights and health at its center.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in criminal justice and/or public health/policy or related area and 5 or more years of directly relevant experience (i.e., time spent working or living in a correctional facility may count as relevant experience depending on the nature of activities and responsibilities) or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Experience in managerial or project leadership.Superior professionalism and ability to partner effectively with diverse stakeholders.Extensive skill and experience coordinating complex projects and/or partnerships.Proven ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills.Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects/programs at once (often with competing deadlines/demands).Excellent Microsoft Office Suite skills; excellent video conferencing skills.Ability to travel nationally & internationally to achieve program goals.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's Degree in criminal justice and/or public health/policy or related area.Experience in grant writing, managing budgets, and program staff.Background or academic grounding in education and/or training and/or moderating small and large groups, including using remote technologies.Experience with project management programs and/or software.
