Neighbourhood Legal Services (London & Middlesex) Inc. (NLSLM) is a community legal clinic funded by Legal Aid Ontario. We provide legal advice and representation to low-income residents of the City of London and County of Middlesex in Income Maintenance (Ontario Works, Ontario Disability Support Program, Canada Pension Plan Disability and Child Tax Benefit), Employment law matters (Wrongful Dismissal, Employment Insurance (EI) and Workers’ Rights), and Housing (for Tenants on eviction matters). We also engage in law reform projects and public legal education that will benefit our clients.We are seeking a lawyer to join our team. We are open to hiring lawyers from private practice who are seeking work-life balance – which we can offer!This is a Unionized and permanent position, subject to a three-month probationary period. The candidate will primarily provide legal services in the areas of income maintenance law (regularly appearing before the Social Benefits Tribunal and Social Security Tribunal) and Employment Law (with appearances before the Ontario Labour Relations Board, Ontario Human Rights Tribunal, Small Claims Court, and the Social Security Tribunal for EI matters). They will also take part in law reform and public legal education in their areas of law, with their team members.Qualifications Include:Experience with legal research, advice, and communications is required;Experience working up cases for Tribunals or Court (interviewing clients and witnesses, collecting and filing evidence, and drafting court materials or administrative tribunal submissions) is required;Experience appearing before a Court or Tribunal is an asset;Ability to manage a high caseload (approximately 60 files) is required;Effective oral and written advocacy skills are required;Member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario.The candidate’s salary will be commensurate with the Hay consultant report and will depend on the year of call. For NLSLM at this time, the 2019 year of call salary for a lawyer is $87,000.00. In addition to the base salary, there is a 5.5% per year RRSP, group benefits without co-pay, and a generous vacation package as per the Collective Agreement (CA). Under the CA, employees start at 4 weeks vacation, plus one week floaters/personal days off, plus benefit from the closure of the clinic from December 23 of every year until the New Year, following the Jan 1 statutory holiday. This amounts to at least 6 weeks off a year. Statutory and Non-Statutory holidays are also observed.
