WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

The Department of Public Safety, Division of Statewide Services, is recruiting for a Criminal Justice Specialist to conduct audits with criminal justice agencies having access to the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN) system for compliance with state and federal requirements; to conduct audits with law enforcement agencies using APSIN and other federal criminal justice systems; and to provide training classes on system functionality, requirements, procedures, and system security issues governing the use of APSIN and other federal criminal justice systems. This position is the subject matter expert for the APSIN system and works in coordination with two other auditors to ensure the security, integrity, and confidentiality of criminal justice information.

OUR ORGANIZATION, MISSION, AND CULTURE:Audit requirements are mandated in AS 12.62.150, and training is necessary for compliance with AS12.62, AS 12.80.060, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) policy as part of the shared management concept for criminal justice information. In addition to meeting statutory requirements, the audits ensure records submitted by statewide criminal justice agencies with access to the APSIN are complete, accurate, and entered within established timelines. This position conducts formal training classes on using the APSIN system several times per year in Anchorage, Sitka, Fairbanks, and other locations as requested. Additionally, the position provides daily support through email and phone calls to law enforcement and other criminal justice agency personnel throughout the state.

THE WORKING CONDITIONS YOU CAN EXPECT:This position is located in East Anchorage in the Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Headquarters building located at 5700 East Tudor Road. Office space consists of individual workstations in an open area to encourage collaborative efforts, and the office space is shared with the other six members of the team. The Chugach Mountains provide the backdrop for the building and ample parking is available; public transportation drop points are located directly in front of the building and paved trails are located right next to the building.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR:Ability to multi-task with frequent interruptions while delivering a timely and accurate work product; experience must demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to changing priorities while maintaining a positive attitude.Skill in analyzing complex issues and situations, drawing logical conclusions, and making successful recommendations regarding a course of action based on that analysis.Strong interpersonal skills necessary to create and maintain professional, cooperative working relationships; experience working effectively in a team setting with individuals from a variety of backgrounds at different levels in the organization to achieve goals and objectives.Experience working independently with minimal supervision while showing initiative and exercising sound judgment.Experience communicating complex legal or technical information to a variety of audiences, both verbally and in writing, to include making presentations and writing reports.

http://dps.alaska.gov/Minimum Qualifications:A bachelor's degree from an accredited college.ORAn associate's degree from an accredited college in Criminal Justice, Paralegal Studies, Justice, or a closely related field.ORTwo years of advanced paraprofessional experience in support of professional law enforcement staff in the development, analysis, and implementation of a law enforcement, public safety or criminal justice program. The required experience includes work such as Criminal Justice Technician 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.ORFour years of advanced or supervisory paraprofessional or technical experience in support of criminal justice staff, involving data or evidence collection, processing, analysis and reporting. The required experience includes work such as Criminal Justice Technician 1, Emergency Services Dispatcher with the Department of Public Safety, Fingerprint Technician, Paralegal, or Law Office Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.
