Scope of Position :

Design and manage the production of the museum’s exhibition and gallery environments, under the supervision of the Director of Collections, Exhibitions, and Interpretation, in collaboration with all museum departments including Interpretation, Experience, Curatorial, Conservation, and Security.

Duties and Responsibilities :

Supervise, manage, and provide dynamic leadership for the DMA's in-house exhibition design team, consisting of an Exhibition Designer and Senior Manager of Gallery Technology.

Design and/or collaborate with staff and/or outside exhibition design contractors on presentations of temporary exhibitions and permanent collection installations.

Create exhibition graphic identity and design drawing packages (layouts, elevations, case schedules etc) for construction, fabrication, and installation of art objects.

Chair meetings, organize presentations, and support initiatives to implement design.

Develop design standards and processes for all three-dimensional and graphic components within art galleries.

Manage repository for all gallery floor plans and design templates.

Oversee and track all aspects of design from initial concepts through fabrication and final delivery.

In collaboration with Carpentry Manager, ensure quality of built elements are up to DMA standard.

Collaborate with Interpretation and Curatorial staff on didactics, interactives, and other interpretation elements for exhibitions.

Maintain inventory of exhibition furniture, casework, and accessories.

Produce design materials such as sketches, renderings, models, and maquettes.

Produce creative work or ideas that respond to functional, aesthetic, and/or budgetary constraints.

Requirements: Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

B.A. degree required

Minimum of 5 years’ experience with architectural, environmental, 3D, or exhibition design required.

Additional 2-D graphic, environmental graphic, interactive media, or wayfinding design experience is strongly preferred.

Strong experience with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite required.

Strong experience with CAD, Sketch-up, or other 3D design tools required.

Ability to understand color as applied to environmental spaces and knowledge of lighting design.

Excellent computer skills with Office 365 applications required.

Excellent demonstrated skills in production process and management.

Strong communication, collaboration, teamwork and presentation skills.

Portfolio and/or project sample submission required.
