Baylor University Medical Center - Perfusion ServicesAddress: 3500 Gaston Ave, 2nd Floor OR, Dallas, TX 75246JOB SUMMARYThe Perfusionist provides patient care in the form of operation of the extracorporeal circulation equipment during any medical situation where it is necessary to help or replace a person's cardiopulmonary, circulatory, or respiratory function. Selects the appropriate equipment and techniques necessary for help, treatment, measurement, or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary and circulatory system of a patient, including the safe monitoring, examination, and treatment of physiologic conditions under an order and under the supervision of a physician.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLEMonitors the altered circulatory process, initiates appropriate action when abnormalities arise, and keeps surgeon and other team members informed.Ensures the sterility and integrity of packaging of disposable equipment used and the correct setup and breakdown of disposable and non-disposable and sterile and non-sterile equipment.Monitors cell saver and operates the heart-lung machine, blood gas examination machine, clotting time/heparin analyzer, and cardiac-help devices.Mixes and administers drugs and solutions required for extracorporeal circulation in a way that is consistent with industry best practices and established policies and procedures.Adjusts gas flow and mixtures, administers anesthetic agents, blood, drugs and fluids via the extracorporeal circuit in a way that consistently results in safe and effective procedures.Records relevant perfusion information during surgery; evaluates and maintains records after surgery.Performs quality control/preventive maintenance to ensure accuracy and longevity of equipment. Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies.KEY SUCCESS FACTORSKnowledge of human anatomy and physiology, chemistry and biology.Knowledge of several cardiac disease, defects and congenital anomalies.Knowledge of sterile and perfusion supplies: extracorporeal oxygenators, tubing circuits, and cannulae for adult, pediatric and infants.Knowledge of arteries, veins, organs, and specific paths of blood flow throughout the body, of pressures and gas exchange within the body adult, pediatric and infant patients.Knowledge of blood components, plasma composition of the human body and use of blood products by extracorporeal circuits and devices.Skill in operating extracorporeal circulation and autotransfusion equipment.Verbal and written communication skills.Ability to follow orders, take directions, and deploy written perfusion protocols.Ability to communicate clearly and effectively during operation of extracorporeal help devices and providing patient care.Ability to learn and apply regulatory and accreditation standards and protocols that apply to operating room procedures and departmental policies and protocols.Ability to work and join in a flexible way in the delivery of patient care demonstrating a cohesive team approach.Ability to react calmly in stressful situations.BENEFITSOur competitive benefits package includes the following:Immediate eligibility for health and welfare benefits401(k) savings plan with dollar-for-dollar match up to 5%Tuition ReimbursementPTO accrual beginning Day 1Note: Benefits may vary based on position type and/or levelQUALIFICATIONSEDUCATION - Bachelor'sEXPERIENCE - 1 Year of ExperienceCERTIFICATION/LICENSE/REGISTRATION - Cert Clinical Perfusionist (CCP), Licensed Perfusionist (PERFUSIO), Basic Life Support (BLS): BLS or BLS within 30 days of hire or transfer.
