General Purpose

Provide legal advice on a variety of complex energy and transactional issues, with a primary emphasis on energy generation and dispatch, state and federal environmental regulations and energy markets. Experience with generation, energy supply and co-ownership and commercial contracts preferred. Experience with federal energy policy, securities, litigation, FERC, state regulatory commissions, corporate law and governance or other specialized areas across the company a plus. May consult with outside legal counsel and provide guidance and training to less experienced attorneys.ResponsibilitiesResponsible for directing strategy and implementation of the laws related to energy generation, energy markets and the overlap with state and federal environmental regulations.Ensure appropriate application of all laws and regulations related to PacifiCorp's generation, energy management and supply, corporate and operational activities and transactions.Assess and mitigate legal risks of company activities and advise management and other company personnel on legal and strategic matters.Participate in contract negotiation and ensure compliance with contract terms.Monitor and maintain current knowledge of industry trends in legal and compliance matters relating to the electricity industry and pursue ongoing professional development to maintain current knowledge on best practices.Provide legal counsel and direction across departments within Rocky Mountain Power and PacifiCorp.Handle complex legal matters and projects associated with electricity generation, supply and marketing including but not limited to FERC, EPA, DOE, securities, and litigation.Represent the company in court, formal hearings, and/or regulatory/agency hearings.Consult with outside legal counsel and provide guidance and training to less experienced attorneys.Serve as a primary interface with senior management as necessary regarding establishment of litigation reserves and accruals.Draft and negotiate agreements and counsel on compliance, operations, litigation, and risk management issues.Manage attorneys and other legal staff as appropriate.RequirementsJuris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school and successful completion of bar exam in one or more states in which the company conducts business (or the ability to transfer to obtain state accreditation).A minimum of eight years previous law firm, government or corporate legal experience.Demonstrated in-depth experience and knowledge of energy, electricity regulatory and/or energy marketing issues.Familiarity with the political and legal implications of decisions made by electric utilities.Management skills including the ability to negotiate with and influence peers and senior officers on policy and strategic issues.Communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to manage and motivate employees.Use oral and written communication to create a vision, communicate strategy, and effectively interface with other company leaders.Knowledge of the company's strategic plan, regulatory and political environment, as well as applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.Ability to assess and interpret external rules and regulations.
