Position Summary

Oversee the admission, advising, student life, and reporting of ESL and incoming international exchange and visiting students. Recruit ESL students. Responsible for CEA accreditation process and maintenance.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

Admissions, Advising, and Student Support

Manage the process of recruiting, admitting, advising, and supporting new and existing ESL students for full-time and part-time programs; assist ESL students with the admission process and application procedures.Advise students on academic progress and communicate with teachers for student concerns.Manage the process of admitting incoming international exchange and visiting students from inquiry to enrollment and registration. Manage incoming and current student lists for all three student types.Oversee testing and student advising.Program Management

Create and develop new strategies to increase ESL, international exchange, and visiting students’ engagement on campus.Develop and manage all ESL academic content, including curriculum, books, assessments, testing procedures, etc., for all classes and levels.Hire and supervise ESL instructors.Collaborate with the publishing houses and evaluate and select books for curriculum.Verify instructors’ syllabi for classes to ensure compliance with CEA and syllabus requirements.Oversee the ESL professional development program as required by CEA.Observe and document results of observations for all ESL instructors.Conduct annual reviews of ESL instructors.Research and provide contemporary resources for ESL instructors, including technology.Manage open communication related to ESL, international exchange, and visiting student progress and new policies and procedures with all government scholarship agencies.Manage education agent communications and agreements.Responsible for CEA and AAIEP accreditation maintenance, documentation, and reporting. Participate in seminars, webinars, and conferences for ongoing professional development as required by CEA Accreditation.In collaboration with ESL colleagues and SHU’s student support services, organize student activities and field trips. Organize summer visiting groups with arrival, testing, activities, and accommodations.Organize and prepare new student orientation for all new ESL, international exchange, and visiting students and prepare new student welcome packets.Communicate end-of-term events to students and faculty. Keep ESL, international exchange, and visiting students up to date with on-campus activities.Clearly communicate with ESL, international exchange, and visiting students about conduct, academic progress, and visa regulations.In close cooperation with international admissions, create and develop new strategies to grow ESL program.Academic Support

Manage the co-curriculum for ESL students and assist in the CEA accreditation process – including research, documentation, and reporting.Student Outreach

Responsible for marketing and outreach to international and domestic ESL students.Monitor web content for ESL department and liaise with webmaster on updates and changes to web content. Collaborate with marketing on developing and organizing marketing materials.Manage social media content, including documentation of student activities and events.Stakeholder Support

Manage open communication related to ESL, international exchange, and visiting student progress and new policies and procedures with all government scholarship agencies.Manage agent recruitment, training, communication, and agreements.Collaborate with the Office of Admissions on incoming international students and in managing the successful transfer of ESL students into degree programs as well as exchange and visiting students transfer to academic departments. Attend all graduate and undergraduate student orientations to represent ESL services to international students.Work collaboratively with academic leadership to integrate the IEP students into the broader SHU community.Attend conferences and outside organization meetings as needed.Finance

Prepare ESL department monthly reports as well as exchange and visiting international students’ term reports.Manage ESL department calendar, responsible for successful back-up of ESL department information.Communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of settings, using appropriate terminology by phone and email. Manage the organization of the ESL “shared drive” keeping up to date with all scanned documents and filing.Provide management of ELI and education abroad financial portfolios, including oversight of budgets for custom ELI programs and office operational budgets.Responsible for oversight of accounting, resource allocation, and managing fiscally sound programs.Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, & Other Attributes

Required Qualifications

A minimum of bachelor's degree in a related fieldExperience studying/living abroadExperience in a professional settingDemonstrated proficiency/skills using Microsoft Office Suite programsExperience with SEVIS and managing F and J visa programsEffective written, oral communication, and oral presentation skillsEffective social media and web design skills in a professional settingStrong cross-cultural communication skills are essentialA team player with a positive attitude and a willingness to be flexibleMust be able to multitask and work on several projects at a timeAbility to develop and implement plans and projectsAbility to analyze and solve problemsAbility to coordinate and organize meetings and/or special events and to work under pressure as a member of a teamWillingness and ability to work outside of regular business hours of operation, including during evenings and on weekends, as necessaryWillingness and ability to travel internationallyPreferred Qualifications

Master's Degree in a related fieldAt least a year of experience in working with international or study abroad students, or international educationDemonstrated knowledge of international education, including English as a Second Language, and sponsored student programsExperience recruiting international studentsExperience advising international students in a higher education settingDemonstrated ability to build collaborative professional relationships with faculty and administrators, both on-campus and with national and international partners in higher educationFluency in one of the following languages: Arabic, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese or Portuguese a plusUnusual Working Conditions

Non-traditional work hours as necessary to accommodate various time zones and to respond to student needs and emergencies. Anticipate working on some weekends and after normal working hours.
