Compensation:
$83,000-91,000 (commensurate with experience), Full-time Exempt
The Museum provides education to the public about the history, technology, and innovation of the American fire service through a unique collection of operating apparatus, memorabilia, and programs. The Fire Museum therefore seeks an Executive Director to lead us into the future through fund-raising and outreach. The Executive Director will shape the Museum’s future, overseeing administration, programs, and strategic planning. The Museum is one of the largest fire museums in the country, dedicated to preserving the rich history of urban firefighting for all ages.
Job Summary:
The Executive Director is the chief executive officer of the Fire Museum of Maryland. We are seeking a high-energy person who will encourage positive strategic planning and provide effective fund-raising for growing programs; working with paid and volunteer staff to maximize their skills.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Performance and Viability:
Develop and manage the annual budget in coordination with the Board of Directors and staff, ensuring that funds are committed as planned and operating with a positive cash-flow. Provide imaginative and clear leadership for the occasional capital campaign.
Collections Focus and Care:
Continue the traditions established by Stephen Heaver and family, wherein the historic apparatus is accurately portrayed and operated skillfully, assisting the curatorial and archival staff, as required.
Community and Public Relations:
Serve with the Board, staff and volunteers as advocates for the Museum, enhancing a stronger relationship with donors, members, political leaders, and other potential stakeholders.
Board Relations:
Work closely with the Board of Directors to develop and implement the Museum’s strategic plan. Coordinate with the President of the Board in enhancing the activities of the Board’s committees.
Qualifications:
A master’s degree is preferred; A Bachelor’s degree in museum studies, history, fund raising, business administration or a related field.
Minimum of 5-7 years leadership experience in a museum, cultural institution, or non-profit organization.
Demonstrated success in fund-raising, including individual donations, grant writing and major gift solicitations.
