Job SummaryMaryland’s Preeminent Public Urban Research University and designated National Treasure Morgan State University is seeking a versatile and creative communicator to join the University’s Office of Public Relations and Strategic Communications (OPRSC). Working alongside and under the supervision of the Manager of Public Relations, the Communications & Social Media Specialist will serve as a multimedia storyteller who uses communications skills to find, write, pitch, and track content that enhances the reputation of Morgan State University. This position leverages various evolving platforms, including the news media, social media, the University’s news site, and marketing initiatives.

The Communications & Social Media Specialist will also be responsible for writing, editing, and managing social media-related content, as well as managing the University’s presence across social media platforms (including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, and LinkedIn), including writing and editing social media posts, audience engagement, social media campaigns, and event promotion, and will collaborate with campus-wide departments to develop content and plans that are consistent with the University’s voice, brand, and identity. The ideal candidate must provide constant, relevant, and newsworthy information on social media sites to create a seamless, integrated approach to media engagement and a visible presence. The keen ability to maximize and amplify communications across multiple platforms with messaging customized for each medium and its varied audiences will be critical to the outlined position.

The selected individual will collaborate with the Director of Public Relations, Assistant Vice President of Public Relations and Strategic Communications, and the Assistant Director of Web Communications, helping Morgan tell powerful and engaging stories that resonate with stakeholders.

Job Duties

Job Responsibilities

Produce original written content, including online announcements, web feature stories, and other content for distribution via a variety of channels, including digital, print, video, audio, and social media. This may require conducting research and interviewing subjects.

Establish and maintain relationships with partners across the University community and externally to amplify content through a broad network.

Generate and edit content in collaboration with students, alumni, faculty, and others for the website, University publications, or other channels.

Collaborate with team members, serve as interviewers/producers for video interviews, coordinate logistics, prepare questions for experts, and conduct interviews.

Monitor social media daily, identifying news that merits amplification, identifying potential issues or opposing brand challenges, and responding to inquiries.

Work closely with departments to ensure proper content and messaging are executed online.

Conduct weekly editorial meetings to collect ideas from team members, overseeing the editorial calendar.

Develop comprehensive statistical and narrative reports and perform other duties as required.

Contribute to a positive, collaborative work environment and use resources effectively to minimize turnaround time without compromising quality.

Will be on-call periodically during early morning hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays. You may be required to work from home or other off-site locations.

Demonstrate cross-platform digital knowledge, including social media, web design, mobile technologies, online and social advertising, etc.

Monitor social media analytics and conduct weekly reporting across every social channel to ensure KPIs are met and to make recommendations for optimizations.

Work with the PR team to address and/or respond to crisis communication needs.

Requested Minimum Qualifications

Education:

A Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, or a related field from an accredited college or university is required.

Experience:

At least three years of relevant work experience is required.

Other Preferences for Consideration

Prior experience in higher education either in an agency environment or as an internal communications professional.

Preference will be given to candidates with direct experience overseeing and managing social media communications for a recognizable brand.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Outstanding organizational, communication, writing, editing and interpersonal skills.

Experience developing communications for distribution across multiple platforms, including social media.

Experience preparing for and conducting interviews with experts and individuals at multiple levels of an organization, with an ability to make interview subjects feel comfortable and confident in the final communication output.

Ability to understand complex information and translate it for a general audience in a way that is both digestible and engaging.

Proven ability to learn quickly, work efficiently and manage multiple projects and priorities, while working in a fast-paced environment.

Demonstrated ability to both work independently with minimal supervision and work with others within a collaborative, team-based, positive work environment.

Professional, polished interpersonal skills, including experience in managing and maintaining confidential information.

Excellent time management and organization skills to manage multiple projects at the same time and demonstrate impeccable attention to detail.

Strong writing/editing, listening and presentation skills.

Experience with social media management systems/platforms is preferred (e.g. Sprinklr, Sprout, Agorapulse, or Hootsuite).

Working knowledge of and experience with email marketing platforms (e.g. MailChimp, BEE, Constant Contacts, emfluence, MailerLite).

General familiarity with conceptualizing and developing social graphics using design platforms (e.g., Canva, MotionArray, Adobe Creative Suite, etc.).

Demonstrated experience in effective communication strategies and tools, including print, web, electronic media, AP Style and other e-communication tools.

Familiarity with media tracking services and databases.
