Position Title: Provost & Chief Academic Officer

The Opportunity

The provost is the senior academic administrator at the institution and provides primary leadership, direction, planning, and evaluation for all academic activities and faculty affairs of the University. Responsibilities include oversight of the College of Arts and Humanities, Plaster College of Business and Entrepreneurship, College of Science, Technology, and Health, and College of Education and Human Services, as well as other interdepartmental functions, such as Institutional Effectiveness, Registrar, Academic Services, and Library Services. The Chief Academic Officer supervises all academic personnel.

Responsibilities

Teaching and Learning

As primarily a teaching institution that prides itself on academic freedom, the Provost ensures the quality of the student educational experience.

Fosters intellectual growth, learning, and scholarly and creative activities for students and faculty.

Leadership and Strategic Thinking

Delivers transformative strategic thought, administrative leadership, direction, evaluation, and policy development for academic programs, activities, and faculty affairs.

Deftly balances and aligns the strategic needs of the university with the strengths of faculty and academic staff; zealously advocates for university and academic team.

Provides framework for evaluating and addressing programmatic trends in the employment marketplace that includes cost justifications for current and future academic programs.

Provides leadership and guidance on diversity initiatives for faculty, staff, and students.

Facilitates compliance with accreditation standards.

Human Resources Management

Seeks and fosters deep professional relationships with faculty, academic staff, and students.

Works with the senior vice president for human resources on faculty and academic-staff personnel matters in addition to university and faculty governance.

Leads and advocates as a member of Cabinet in planning and fostering University growth and evaluating performance against objectives.

Administrative Duties

Stewards the University's academic budget.

Coordinates with other division leaders to allocate and oversee human, financial, and space resources.

Communication and Collaboration

Works closely with the University president, the deans of the academic colleges, and other campus leaders to ensure optimal performance.

Engages in effective University advancement, alumni affairs, and advocacy on behalf of the institution.

Qualifications

Doctoral degree in an academic area of specialization, or in business or education.

Ten years of experience in the higher education sector and a minimum of five years as an academic administrator at the dean level or above involving both graduate and undergraduate programs.

Academic credentials consistent with the rank of professor, as demonstrated by a distinguished record of teaching, scholarly publications, and/or creative accomplishments that exhibit commitment to academic excellence.

Experience in strategic planning, assessment of program effectiveness, including business case analysis of future programming, and development of policy to enhance academic units within the university and with national accrediting bodies.

Successful experience in university advancement and fundraising and experience in developing and/or securing external grant and contract funding.

Strong leadership and collaborative skills.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.

Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with the community, faculty, students, staff, and board of directors.

Strong analytical, organization, and creative skills.

Strong initiative and interpersonal skills.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Understanding of emerging technologies and the effective application of instructional technologies to enhance student learning.

Understanding of contemporary issues in higher education.

Understanding of high-impact academic practices that lead to student success.

Compensation

Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with the experience level, credentials, and characteristics of the candidate. An outstanding benefits package will be included as part of a complete compensation package.
