Working at the University of California is being part of a unique institution, and a vibrant and diverse community.DEPARTMENT OVERVIEWUC Legal delivers ethical, timely, efficient and high quality legal services to the University of California's ten campuses, five medical centers, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, as well as to the Board of Regents, the President, the Chancellors and other officers of the University.POSITION SUMMARYUC Legal is filling two positions that require substantial expertise in the labor and employment practice area. One position will have a portfolio with an emphasis advising on traditional labor matters. The other position will have a portfolio with an emphasis on representing the University in pre-litigation employment claims. All members of the labor and employment practice area provide advice to a diverse client base for the University's 230,000 person workforce.Responsibilities65% LEGAL SERVICES:Provides advice and counsel on highly complex legal matters in labor and employment law.Independently handles a full range of legal matters and projects, to include those which hold substantial importance and impact.Represents the University in pre-litigation employment claims including engaging with opposing counsel and participating in alternative dispute resolution.Advises on traditional labor matters, and handles litigation before administrative agencies.10% CLIENT RELATIONSHIPS AND STRATEGY:Establishes effective relationships with key internal and external constituencies.Recognizes strategic needs of organization and proactively builds relationships with appropriate stakeholders.15% LEADERSHIP:Delegates work effectively to maximize efficiencies.Provides clear expectations and feedback to help others to meet expected levels of productivity and accuracy.10% PROACTIVE ADVICE AND COUNSEL:Keeps informed on changing legislation and case law developments affecting overall operations of the University.ExperienceRequired Qualifications:Minimum of 8 years of employment and/or labor law experience in a law firm, or in-house counsel for an academic institution, corporation or other entity.Skills and Abilities:Excellent abilities in collaboration, facilitation, and strategic and creative thinking.Thorough understanding of highly complex legal issues.Strong interpersonal communication skills.Education:Advanced degree in a related area is required.Licenses and Certifications:Must be a member in good standing of the California Bar.Travel Requirements:10% Occasional business travel.SPECIAL CONDITIONS:The person hired will be required to reside within California and report to work on-site at UC's Office of the President located in Oakland, CA on a regular basis.SALARY AND BENEFITS:Job Title:
