The JHCP Chief of Section - Internal Medicine

oversees the clinical quality of all physicians and advanced practice providers (APPs) practicing within a Specialty at JHCP. They are the primary conduit to the JHUSOM Department Directors to ensure uniform quality standards across John Hopkins Medicine.

Reporting Relationships:

Position Reports directly to the Vice President Medical Affairs of JHCP who will have primary responsibility for hiring and management.

Key roles within JHCP:

Directly responsible and accountable for the quality of care and professionalism of all providers in the JHCP Specialty Section

Coordinates with JHU Department Directors including developing and monitoring quality standards

Directs and assists instructional/educational activities of the Section / Specialty

Responsible for disseminating information to Section physicians and APPs

Attests to the quality of all physician and APPs as part of the hiring process

Performs robust annual clinical reviews for all employed physicians and APPs within the Section

Provides clinical expertise and medical staff perspective to organization planning

Knowledgeable of all JHCP policies and procedures applicable to the Section / Specialty

Identify, mentor and develop physician leaders within organization

Accountabilities of position:

Manages physician performance and behaviors

Oversees annual performance review for all providers in specialty

Member of Credentialing/Peer Review Committees

Member of the JHCP Research Committee

Member of the Practice Standards Committee

Member of the Education Committee

Establishes clear expectations based on mission, vision, values

Assess, plans, and ensures implementation of clinical policy

Annual Review Process for JHCP physicians and APPs:

All JHCP provider staff (those with independent licenses to practice, i.e. MDs, DO’s, DC’s, NPs, PAs) will have an annual review. The purpose of the review is to assure high quality of clinical care, compliance with professional and corporate policies, and appropriate regulatory compliance.

Balanced and comprehensive review process for all providers to be linked to re-credentialing

Professional conduct is the responsibility of the Section Chief. When reviewing elements of a provider’s professional activity, including behavioral issues, Section Chief will document in a standard action grid.

The annual review process will include the following minimum elements:

Confirmation of quality compliance with JHUSOM defined standards (set annually, including high volume procedure clinical reviews)

Clinical pertinence a minimum of five chart reviews

Billing audit compliance

Key performance indicators assigned yearly (e.g., closed encounters)

Patient experience ratings (CAHPS)

Requirements:

Licensed MD/DO with active license in Maryland, DC, and Virginia (potentially acquired after hire, but as a condition of employment). Other state licenses may be needed.

At least five years direct patient care experience
