The Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard University focuses on research and training aimed at improving global health delivery and promoting health equity worldwide. An interdisciplinary approach is key to achieving global health equity, addressing the complex social, economic, and political factors influencing global health care. Through disciplines like anthropology, history, sociology, economics, implementation science, and bioethics, department investigators seek to understand how issues like poverty, inequality, and access to resources act as barriers to health. In collaboration with community-based and clinical organizations, we develop and evaluate interventions and systems for improving health care delivery.In memory of the late Paul Farmer, the department has established the U.S. Health Equity Postdoctoral Fellowship. Fellows will be early-career researchers spending two years in the department, pursuing an original research project to advance a more equitable and efficient U.S. health care system, with field research sites in low-income settings. Each fellow will have two mentors: a primary mentor from Global Health and Social Medicine and a co-mentor from another Harvard school or department.Department Senior Faculty lead research in the following areas:Digital technology for health careEcology of poverty and developmentHealth impacts of the climate crisisHistory of medicineIntersection of culture, coloniality and well-being in North American Indigenous communitiesMedical anthropologyMental health: epidemiology, interventions, implementation sciencePolitical economy of healthTuberculosis: epidemiology, clinical trials, co-infection, social stigma, community interventionsThe aim of this program is to expand the pool of talented academic leaders equipped to conduct research that advances health equity using the frames of social medicine. Fellows will be mentored to pursue the next phase of their careers and will have opportunities to participate in department seminars and career-development workshops at Harvard Medical School.Location:

Final decisions are expected in January 2025, with offer letters extended in February 2025.Basic Qualifications:Doctoral degree in any field linked to social medicine or global healthPriority consideration for applicants who completed their PhD in the three years prior to the start dateExperience working in low-income communitiesKnowledge of U.S. health care systemsAdditional Qualifications:

Applicants should be intellectually curious researchers at an early stage of their scholarly career, with experience collaborating with local research partners in low-income communities, demonstrated capacity for independent work, and engagement with researchers and faculty.
