Description of Work Unit: Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Located an hour north of the Denver metro area, Fort Collins is a vibrant community of approximately 157,000 residents that offers the convenience of a small town with all the amenities of a large city. Position Summary: The Director/Chief Risk Officer for the Office of Risk Management & Insurance is responsible for the organization’s risk management policies, objectives, and initiatives. This position manages CSU’s property and casualty self-insurance program and oversees the department's experts in insurance, ergonomics, liability, workers compensation, business continuity planning, and temporary modified duty. The position reports to the AVP of Safety and Risk Services.

Given the nature of the position, it is expected to have a wide latitude of managerial authority and decision-making responsibilities.

Required Job Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Risk Management, or related field (i.e., Law, Insurance) and 5 years of experience in Risk Management and Insurance.

Minimum of 3 years’ progressive supervisory and management experience.

Preferred Job Qualifications

Master's Degree in Business Administration, Risk Management, or related field (i.e., Law, Insurance).

Demonstrated experience in managing self-insurance programs and commercial insurance portfolios.

Experience in contract review and indemnification processes.

Skills in financial modeling, reserve development, and forecasting.

Proven ability to lead and work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.

Commitment to continuous professional development and staying current with industry trends and best practices.

Advanced skills in financial modeling, reserve development, and forecasting.

Job Duty CategoriesInsurance Program Management

Manage CSU’s Property & Casualty self-insurance program.

Develop, implement, monitor, and administer self-insurance program.

Project manage the University’s annual insurance renewals.

Review and determine the best mechanism for financing risk.

Contract and Indemnification Management

Review insurance provisions in CSU sponsored programs, vendor, partner, and facilities contracts.

Assess, review, and approve contracts requiring CSU indemnification obligations.

Provide training and support for FTE support.

Risk Management and Business Continuity

Advise departments on drafting risk management plans.

Provide risk management best practices recommendations.

Vendor management – Responsible for selection and appointment of vendors.

Regulatory Compliance and Reporting

Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

Prepare and present risk management presentations and training on various topics.

Supervision of staff, training, and professional development.
