*This is a provisional appointment, and you will be required to sit for the civil service exam for this title when it is next held. In order to be considered for a probationary appointment, you must attain a passing score for the exam, and be among the top three highest scoring candidates willing to accept the position. Also open to any candidate who holds a suitable competitive class Civil Service title in permanent Civil Service status who is eligible for reinstatement or transfer.

The Town of Greenburgh is seeking a Part Time Forestry Officer (17 ½ hours per week) who will work under the general direction of the Deputy Commissioner/Forestry Officer

Salary: $35 to $40 per hour (dependent on experience)

Description/Examples of Work (Illustrative Only):

Administers and enforces the provision of the local law regarding tree preservation and removal for the Town of Greenburgh

Performs tree inspections related to permit applications, as required under Chapter 260 of the Town Code;

Uses computer applications such as spreadsheets, Microsoft Word, Outlook calendar and email, and database software needed for performing work assignments.

Determines full compliance with, as well as restoration of tree planting, preservation and tree dressing of properties

Explains the requirements of the local law to property owners, tenants, tree care companies and the public

Issues stop work orders when a permit holder is in violation of the local law

Provides testimony and documentation to local court when violators are being prosecuted

Follows up on violations to assure correction by those responsible

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Attributes

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of tree preservation, tree maintenance and arboriculture; ability to identify tree species, insects and diseases of trees; ability to assess the health and structural stability of trees; ability to effectively use computer applications such as i-Tree, GIS, spreadsheets, word processing, e-mail, calendar and database software; ability to organize and conduct field inspections as necessary; ability to interpret visual data from maps and charts; ability to prepare sketches, maps and charts from field inspections; ability to work with others and communicate technical concepts and ideas to non-technical personnel and the public; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to plan and carry out all work as required; resourcefulness; tact; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Minimum Acceptable Training and Experience

Either (a) bachelor’s degree in forestry, horticulture or natural resource management or closely related field and one year of experience in the field of arboriculture; or (b) an associate degree in forestry, horticulture or urban forestry or closely related field and three years’ experience in the field of arboriculture; or (c) a satisfactory equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).

SUBSTITUTIONS:

A master’s degree in forestry, horticulture or natural resource management, or closely related field, may be substituted at the rate of 30 credits per year of experience for up to one year.

NOTE: ONLY EXPERIENCE GAINED AFTER ATTAINING THE MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL LEVEL INDICATED IN THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS WILL BE CONSIDERED IN EVALUATING EXPERIENCE.

Special Requirements

Must hold a current and valid ISA Certified Arborist license; (2) Possession of a license to operate a motor vehicle in the State of New York at time of appointment.
