Job Summary

The Transportation Driver performs work in the operation of a vehicle to assure the safe transportation of clients to and from various destinations and to assist passengers on entry and exit from vehicles as necessary.

Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities

Completes daily vehicle pre-check inspection, ensuring that vehicle is in safe mechanical condition and required safety equipment, such as first aid kits and fire extinguishers are available and working, completing documentation as required.Fuels vehicle when necessary.Maintains a clean vehicle.Exercises particular caution when passengers are getting on or off the vehicle.Administers first aid to passengers if needed.Assists passengers in securing wheelchairs and other mobility devices as trained.Knowledgeable about daily route assignments.Drives program vehicles on assigned routes to transport passengers as trained and expected.Meets route schedules and timelines.Has a working knowledge of the rules and regulations involved in the safe and efficient operation of automotive equipment.Ensures that client care providers, parents, or adult day program staff - and your supervisor - are contacted if passenger(s) will be picked up or dropped off 10 or more minutes later than indicated on route timelines.Maintains accurate documentation.Reports to Transportation Manager any observations that would affect passengers' safety or health.Performs other duties as assigned.Values

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Education

High School Diploma or GED preferred; or any combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the potential ability to perform the duties of the position and demonstrate safe driving experience in the operation of automotive vehicles.Previous experience providing services to persons with developmental, learning or physical disabilities preferred, but not required.A current, valid California Class A or B driver's license with Passenger Endorsement at the time of appointment and maintained at all times thereafter.Drivers are subject to random drug screening as required to comply with CHP and DOT requirements.All drivers are enrolled in the DMV Pull Program.Current VDDP Certificate required within 90 days of employment.Medical Card-DL51.Current CPR and First Aid Certification required within 90 days of employment.Ability to multi-task and establish priorities.Ability to maintain organization in a changing environment.Exhibits initiative, responsibility, flexibility and leadership.Ability to maintain flexible attitude and approach towards assignments and successfully operate under ambiguous guidelinesDrive 10+ passenger bus.Drive automotive vehicles.Ability to operate telephone, cell phone, push to talk units, two-way radios and GPS.Ability to operate mechanical lifts, wheelchairs, adaptive equipment.

Physical Requirements/Work Environment

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to walk, stand, sit, reach, carry, lift, bend, twist, stoop and kneel. The employee is required to assist with lifting, moving, and transferring residents to and from vehicles and wheelchairs as necessary. The employee may frequently move to interact with fellow employees and/or clients. Additionally, the individual may be required to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds. The work involves a significant amount of locomotion including the operation of agency vehicles (6-20 passenger buses) on various types of roads including freeways and in-town.

Home of Guiding Hands is a non-profit organization that was established in 1967 by a small group of dedicated and ambitious community members. The Mission of HGH is "to improve the lives of those we serve". We support children and adults in San Diego and Imperial Counties with intellectual and developmental disabilities, such as Down syndrome, epilepsy, autism, and cerebral palsy. We provide a full continuum of care including residential care in specialized group homes, independent living support, respite care, and adult foster home services. Additionally, we provide early childhood assessments and services, tailored day support, Life Planning workshops, county-wide transportation services, and on-site activities at our resource center.
