Job Description

Avery Dennison's Reflective Solutions Division is seeking a creative, analytical Optical Engineer to join our R&D team in Niles, IL. This role will support the Senior Optical Engineer in developing and manufacturing retroreflective prismatic sheeting for the highway safety market.

Avery Dennison's Reflective Solutions Division develops and manufactures retroreflective prismatic sheeting for highway safety products such as highway sign sheeting and conspicuity tape.

Responsibilities include:

Optical modeling and design

Cube corner prism modeling

Design of new prismatic sheeting types

Selection and maintenance of commercial instrumentation for measurement of topography, retroreflectivity, and color

Development and maintenance of custom instrumentation (hardware and software)

Data analysis from modeling and measurement

Qualifications:Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Optics, Optical Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field

Master's or PhD preferred

4+ years of optics experience in industry and/or academic research setting

Solid understanding of geometric optics, Fourier optics, and color theory

Math proficiency (3D geometry, vector analysis, calculus, Fourier analysis)

Technical programming skills, particularly in object-oriented programming (MATLAB preferred)

Experience with sequential and nonsequential ray tracing preferred

Experience with interferometry, photometry, colorimetry, microscopy, refractometry, and profilometry preferred

Experience with stage/goniometer control preferred

Data analysis skills using programming and spreadsheets (MATLAB and Excel preferred)
