Organization Overview:

The Up Center provides more than 20 critical support services for children and families in our community, including mental health counseling, parenting education and support, youth mentoring, foster care and adoption, housing and financial counseling, and services for people with disabilities. We have served as a safety net for people in crisis for 140 years and have been a longstanding United Way partner organization. Today, we operate at five locations throughout South Hampton Roads and impact over 10,000 people in our community every year by providing evidence-based services and programs that work.Overview of Responsibilities:

The Chief Development Officer (CDO) is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing all of the organization's fundraising including, the major gifts program, annual fund, planned giving, special events, and capital campaigns. The CDO works closely with the Executive Director/CEO and the Board of Directors in all development and fundraising endeavors.Primary ResponsibilitiesFundraising Strategy and Execution:

Develop and implement comprehensive strategic fundraising plans to meet the organization's financial needs and goals.Lead and manage all fundraising initiatives including major gifts, annual giving, corporate donations, foundation grants, and special events.Identify, cultivate, and solicit major donors and sponsorships to secure significant financial support for the organization.Oversee the planning and execution of fundraising events and campaigns.Relationship Management:

Build and maintain strong relationships with current and prospective donors, sponsors, board members, and volunteers.Work collaboratively with the Executive Director/CEO and Board of Directors to engage them in fundraising activities and leverage their networks and resources.Team Leadership and Management:

Supervise and mentor the development team, providing guidance, support, and professional development opportunities.Foster a culture of philanthropy within the organization and ensure alignment of fundraising efforts with the mission and goals.Financial Oversight:

Develop annual budgets for fundraising activities and monitor financial performance to ensure targets are met.Provide regular reports on fundraising progress and outcomes to the Executive Director/CEO and Board of Directors.Strategic Planning and Development:

Participate in strategic planning processes to align fundraising goals with the organization’s overall objectives.Research and implement best practices in fundraising and donor relations to optimize results and donor stewardship.Public Relations and Communications:

Collaborate with the marketing and communications team to develop fundraising materials, donor communications, and promotional strategies.Represent the organization at community events, conferences, and meetings to enhance its public image and attract support.Qualifications:Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in nonprofit management, business administration, or related field preferred.Minimum of 7-10 years of progressively responsible experience in fundraising, with at least 2 years in a senior leadership role.Proven track record of successfully planning and executing fundraising strategies that have resulted in increased revenue and donor acquisition.Strong leadership, management, and interpersonal skills with the ability to inspire and motivate a team.Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to articulate the organization’s mission and impact to diverse audiences.Knowledge of fundraising software and CRM systems; proficiency in Microsoft Office and donor database management.Personal Attributes:Passionate about the mission and values of the organization.Strategic thinker with the ability to see the big picture while managing details effectively.Results-oriented and proactive, with a commitment to achieving fundraising goals and targets.Ethical and transparent in all interactions with donors, colleagues, and stakeholders.Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.Working Conditions:This position typically requires regular office hours but may involve evening and weekend work to attend events or meet deadlines.Travel may be required to meet with donors or attend conferences and events.
