Job DescriptionChicago Public Schools (CPS) is one of the largest school districts in the United States, serving over 320,000 students in 600+ schools and employing approximately 40,000 people, most of them teachers. The Chicago Board of Education (“Board”) is responsible for the governance, organizational and financial oversight of Chicago Public Schools (“CPS” or “District”). The Board establishes policies, standards, goals, and initiatives to ensure accountability and appropriate resource support for achieving the district’s mission. The Board Office staff support the Board in advancing their goals and objectives by facilitating communication with internal and external stakeholders to improve Board member engagement and managing the Board Archives.

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Deputy Chief of Staff of Board Engagement, the Board Manager of Communications is responsible for supporting and executing strategic priorities as a part of the Communications and Engagement functional areas within the Board Office.

The Board Communications Manager will be held accountable for the following responsibilities:

Support and contribute to holistic Board communications and engagement strategies.

Play a key role in developing communication strategies for the Board.

Manage all media relations for the Board, including preparing Board Members for media interviews.

Manage Board of Education website.

Partner with relevant CPS departments to create communications that express the alignment between the Board and CPS.

Manage communications for the Honorary Student Board Member application period.

Draft standard communications to address constituent phone calls and emails.

Develop and maintain trusting relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Draft, edit, and coordinate the distribution of relevant information to stakeholders.

Support Board Members' day-to-day communications with constituents.

Prepare materials and brief Board Members for public meetings and events.

Manage the use of Board Member social media accounts.

Other duties as assigned.

In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, the Board Communications Manager must possess the following qualifications:

Education Required:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required; concentration in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field preferred.

Master’s degree preferred.

Experience Required:

Minimum of seven (7) years of professional experience in communications or marketing.

Minimum of three (3) years experience designing and managing complex communications initiatives.

Experience developing effective communications strategies in a high-growth environment preferred.

Other Requirements:

Reliable access to transportation to travel between worksites/schools within the City of Chicago is required.

Excellent situational judgment skills and emotional intelligence.

Demonstrated ability to lead large-scale projects requiring strategic communications.

Effective project management and time management skills.

Ability to support the Deputy Chief of Staff and anticipate organizational needs.

Skilled at using multiple data sources to inform daily decisions.

Knowledge of operations, management, and organizational design.

Demonstrated dynamic, effective, and results-oriented leadership skills.

Unfailing commitment to operating with discretion and professionalism.

Establish/Maintain Chicago Residency:

Employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date.

Be Fully Vaccinated Against COVID-19:
