OverviewPurpose Statement/Position Summary:

The Executive Director, Laboratory Science is responsible for establishing, evaluating, and overseeing the operations, policies and procedures and supervision of the educational and quality assurance functions of the Animal Care Facility (ACF), Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), Human Embryotic Stem Cell Committee (SCRO) and research Laboratory Safety Office. The position trains faculty, researchers and staff on federal, state, and local regulations and laws pertaining to animal research and regularly provides guidance on these requirements. The position requires knowledge of current federal and state regulations pertaining to the conduct of research and administration of the IACUC, IBC, and SCRO. The Executive Director, Laboratory Science is accountable and responsible for the complete oversight of the TSRI animal care facility (ACF) in accordance with federal, state, and local laws, USDA regulations, PHS policy and AAALAC accreditation standards. The Executive Director Science leads and is responsible for maintaining AAALAC accreditation. This position assures that all activities within laboratory science are performed in accordance with the goals, directives, and policies of Research Operations and CHLA. The position reports to the Chief Research Operating Officer & Vice President, Research Operations. The Executive Director works closely with the IACUC Chair, the IBC Chair, and the Lab Safety Officer and directs staff, veterinarians, and physical plant operations dedicated to maintaining animal welfare and laboratory safety. In this capacity, the Executive Director directs the Laboratory Safety team on safe use of space for laboratory research and is responsible for ensuring that animal use space is designed, constructed, and utilized according to parameters stated in The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. The Executive Director is also fully responsible for space management and allocation of space for laboratory animal use. The position requires daily monitoring of the ACF operation, including after business hours and on weekends and holidays. Position must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills using scientific and clinical laboratory animal health terminology. Requires specialized knowledge of laboratory animal species used to support research at CHLA and the ability to train others to properly care for research animals and ethically utilize them in an experimental setting. Requires basic understanding of common animal care facility systems, including ventilated cage racks, automated watering system, cage wash equipment, environmental controls, anesthesia equipment, and aquatic systems. Requires ability to troubleshoot technical issues with ACF equipment and the physical support environment, including lighting, plumbing, infrastructure, and HVAC systems. The position uses broad-based scientific knowledge to serve as a professional resource to principal investigators, research team members and regulatory staff in all areas of research animal use. Reports the status of the ACF, IACUC, IBC, SCRO, and Lab Safety to Research Operations and federal regulatory and accrediting agencies as necessary.Minimum Qualifications/Work Experience:

10+ years animal laboratory experience. Rodent husbandry, handling, and clinical knowledge required. Zebrafish husbandry and clinical knowledge a plus. At least 5 years in a supervisory capacity. Experience in a more senior management capacity preferred.Education/Licensure/Certification:

PhD in a biological discipline or DVM required.

Pay Scale InformationUSD $199,056.00 - USD $322,483.00

The pay scale listed for this position is generally for candidates that meet the specified qualifications and requirements listed on this specific job description.
