The department of Medicine, division of Finance, has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Director, Sponsored Programs to work on the UHealth campus. The Director, Sponsored Programs guides and oversees externally funded programs for the University, such as research programs and scholarship programs. Additionally, the Director, Sponsored Programs supervises the administrative activities of the relevant programs, including identifying funding sources, acquiring funding, setting program policies and objectives, and allocating resources.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

Oversees the post-award administration of all sponsored programs for the University.

Develops and maintains the post-award database for sponsored programs.

Monitors, keeps current with, interprets, and directs proper application of government and other external funding organizations' rules and regulations.

Department Specific Functions

Oversees research portfolio of 370+ sponsored funds (federal, foundation, and industry). This includes budget development, variance analysis, cost structure optimization, and adherence to institutional and sponsor guidelines.

Federal funding mechanisms range from early career development awards (K series) and fellowship and training grants (T & F series) to independent research grants (R series) and center grants (U and P series). Average annual expenditures exceed $33.5M.

Directly provides programmatic support to federally funded collaboratives from proposal development to post-award management.

Serves in a leadership capacity for both projects and as the main point of contact with collaborators at partner universities for administrative, regulatory, operations, financial, and communications matters.

Facilitates the development of training programs within the department of Medicine with 2 active training grants and 2 proposals in the pipeline.

Collaborates with institutional partners on developing and sharing best practices, contributing to the environment focused on collegiality and shared learning.

Develops and distributes quarterly research newsletter aimed at highlighting faculty achievements, departmental productivity, and encouraging faculty collaboration.

Manages a team of 10 employees with two vacancies to be filled.

Recruits and trains in pre-, post-award, and clinical trial management functions; reviews performance and workload; ensures continuous coverage for all divisions.

Assists Director of Finance and SAO with departmental budget development and variance analysis.

Prepares quarterly research updates for the Chairman, Division Administrators and Chiefs.

Develops materials to highlight research performance for faculty meetings and presentations.

Meets with the Vice Chair for Research monthly to solicit feedback and stay up to date on faculty needs.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in relevant field

Minimum 8 years of relevant experience

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

Knowledge of business and management principles.

Ability to direct, manage, implement, and evaluate department operations.

Ability to establish department goals and objectives that support the strategic plan.

Ability to effectively plan, delegate and/or supervise the work of others.

Ability to lead, motivate, develop, and train others.

Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience and/or certifications may be considered.
