This is a specialized role in which qualified staff are assigned to one of 19 dialysis clinics in the Sioux Falls, Bismarck, Bemidji, and Fargo hospitals as well as surrounding rural facilities.

Job Summary

The Enterprise Central Resource Pool (CRP) Dialysis Technician is a specialized role in which qualified dialysis technician staff are assigned to units across the enterprise based on their clinical experience, skill and organization/unit need. Performs the delegated nursing interventions to the stable dialysis patient under direct supervision of the registered nurse. This may include but not limited to; initiation of dialysis, monitoring patient during treatments, discontinuing treatments, proper operation of the dialysis equipment, gathering and documenting pertinent patient information, and responding to alarms.

Knowledge of and utilize appropriate age related patient care protocols relating to the physical and psychological needs of patients of all age groups. Ability to work with growth and development needs of unique client populations.

Prepares dialysis equipment for patient treatment according to the dialysis prescription; this includes safety tests and setting alarm limits according to policy. Inspect the access site and perform cannulation of the dialysis access to initiate the treatment. Obtains blood samples via the dialysis lines or access site. Adjusts blood flow rates and fluid removal rates according to policy. Monitors and documents dialysis treatment parameters/vital signs and makes adjustments to treatment parameters, under the direction of the licensed nurse. Initiate and discontinue dialysis treatments. Responds to dialysis related emergencies, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, under the direction of the licensed nurse. Administers the medication considered part of the hemodialysis treatment to include: Heparin, local anesthetic via intradermal route, and Normal Saline.

Contribute to development of policies and procedures and standards for the technical aspects. Participates in the orientation and education of dialysis technicians. Documents and communicates performance improvement opportunities as it relates to systems and equipment to meet the requirements of regulatory agencies. Demonstrate proficiency in computerized charting, software applications, and other computer skills.

Scheduled work hours will vary dependent on patient and unit needs. This may include overtime, weekends and holidays.

Qualifications

High school graduate or general equivalency diploma (GED) is required.

One-year dialysis experience required. Knowledge of various equipment/supplies and its general use, medical terminology, and computer skills required.

Must possess or obtain certification as a Hemodialysis Technician from the National Nephrology Certification Commission (NNCC), the Board of Nephrology Examiners Nursing and Technology (BONENT), or other approved certifying agency within 18 months of hire.

If working in North Dakota (ND) must be on the ND Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP)/Technician Registry through the North Dakota Board of Nursing at the time employment begins.

Obtains and subsequently maintains required department specific competencies and certifications. Basic Life Support (BLS) is required through the American Heart.
