General Description

The Medical Director is responsible for overseeing and directing the occupational medicine programs at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). This role includes managing the overall medical services provided to MSFC personnel, ensuring compliance with NASA/MSFC requirements, and leading the development and implementation of quality assurance programs. The Medical Director will also actively participate in patient care, provide guidance to MSFC management, and serve as the primary liaison with medical specialists and regulatory agencies. This position requires a strong background in preventive and occupational medicine, leadership experience, and the ability to manage complex healthcare programs.

How You Will Fulfill Your Mission

Oversee the overall direction and management of the MSFC occupational medicine programs.

Maintain an interface with and respond directly to NASA/MSFC requirements.

Develop, implement, and monitor quality assurance programs, including the proficiency of medical personnel.

Direct and guide the staff of the occupational medicine programs in providing services to MSFC personnel.

Actively participate in examining patients scheduled for physicians’ examination appointments.

Ensure operational readiness for emergency care and treatments.

Perform medical evaluations and provide treatments for occupational and non-occupational injuries and illnesses within the scope of the contract.

Consult with the MSFC Employee Assistance Program (EAP) regarding the health and welfare of MSFC employees.

Provide guidance to MSFC executive and management personnel on health and welfare matters concerning MSFC personnel.

Evaluate applicants applying for participation in the NASA/MSFC Exchange Physical Exercise program.

Refer patients to physicians or specialized health resources for further consultation or treatment as necessary.

Observe universal precautions regarding blood-borne pathogens for patient and personal protection.

Ensure compliance with regulatory standards for hazardous waste management and disposal.

Coordinate with medical specialists for emergency and non-emergency referrals of patients.

Coordinate with ambulance support services and paramedic teams regarding patient transport to medical specialists or local hospitals.

Serve as the MSFC Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Program Physician Director, Medical Technical Authority for MSFC, Physician Advisor to the MSFC Wellness Center, and Physician Advisor to the MSFC Reasonable Accommodations Program.

Arrange and designate staff support and necessary medical supplies for special MSFC events.

Support and participate in locally sponsored medical activities (e.g., Madison County Medical Society) and maintain a respected professional reputation with community physicians and recognized health facilities.

Participate in state and national associations and activities related to occupational and aerospace medicine.

Attend contract-required meetings (e.g., quarterly, semi-annually, annually, or monthly).

Support and participate in NASA-sponsored occupational health events such as TEAM meetings, conferences, workshops, and working groups.

Support the Center’s goals for Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) program improvement, including the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) and/or third-party certification.

Specific Knowledge/Certification Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

Graduate from an accredited medical school

Board Certified in Preventive Medicine, Occupational Medicine, or a primary care specialty

Current medical license in the State of Alabama

Minimum of 10 years of experience in preventive medicine, occupational medicine, or a primary care specialty

At least 5 years of experience as a Medical Director of a clinic, practice, or ambulatory care facility

Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certified

Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration

Certified Professional Supervisor by the Council in Accreditation for Occupational Hearing Conservation (CAOHC)
