The PositionThe Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) is seeking a team-oriented professional to lead communication efforts for the agency. The position will oversee strategic communication initiatives to support MAG's agency goals and work within the core areas of transportation, environmental planning and human services. This position will perform a variety of professional-level duties including public education, public and stakeholder communications, and media relations.

Responsibilities include:

Developing and implementing a multifaceted communication strategy aligned with the agency's mission and key strategic objectives.Developing content associated with MAG's core work in transportation, environmental planning and human services for use in various platforms.Directing communication strategies across platforms (e.g., social media, web, press releases, video storytelling, etc.)Managing media relations and serving as a spokesperson for the agency.Supporting and staffing MAG technical staff with public and media inquiries.Supporting MAG's federally required public and stakeholder participation efforts and reporting to policymakers.Managing and responding to public inquiries and public records requests.Managing agency style guidelines and branding.Engaging, collaborating, and coordinating with member agencies and their communication staff on regional policy matters.Developing briefing materials for, and communicating with, MAG policy and technical committees as well as agency staff.Representing MAG by attending external meetings and presenting to member agencies, stakeholders, and partners.Coordinating with internal staff on federally required Title VI efforts.Evaluating agency communication performance and effectiveness.Coordinating with communication staff of MAG partners including ADOT, Valley Metro, Maricopa County Department of Air Quality, and Arizona Department of Environmental Quality.Assisting MAG executive leadership with special programs or other projects as assigned.Performing other duties, as assigned.

The CandidateThe ideal candidate will have a passion for public service, demonstrated experience working effectively with elected officials at various levels, and have senior-level public sector communication experience. The ideal candidate will demonstrate their experience in developing a communication vision and strategically leading public sector communication efforts. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to think analytically and be at ease translating technically dense data into publicly consumable information. Candidates should have excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills with experience presenting to and working with a variety of audiences (e.g., public, technical, stakeholder, elected); strong editing skills required. Experience in working with media and developing public relations strategies is desired. Demonstrated experience in successfully deploying multiplatform public sector educational campaigns desired. Candidates should demonstrate their experience in and ability to work effectively with elected officials and stakeholders with various political backgrounds and priorities. Successful candidates should be detail-oriented, comfortable working within a fast-paced and dynamic environment (both independently and within a team) and demonstrate a strong work ethic.

Minimum Qualifications/Special Requirements/Success FactorsBachelor's degree in communication, public relations, journalism, marketing or related field, and at least five (5) years of progressive management/leadership experience, preferably in the public sector; more than seven (7) years of progressive management/leadership experience preferred. Knowledge of municipal, state, and federal structures and legislative processes required.

Experience in and knowledge of transportation and air quality planning work preferred. Master's degree in related field preferred.
