About The RoleWe are seeking an outstanding Staff Mechanical Design Engineer to join the Hardware Engineering group to work on the next-generation of multi-omic spatial imaging instruments. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Mechanical Design and precision motion control, ideally with experience developing life sciences equipment. Previous success in product development in producing designs that include nano-precision motion control, mechatronics and vibration isolation or control is a must.What You Will Be DoingThe Staff Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for the design, test and qualification of systems containing precision motion stages to ensure they meet performance & reliability requirements. Additionally, they will:Define the requirements, source, configure, test, and validate the motion solutions for various projects from concept to production in a fast-paced environment.Program multi-axis motion controllers for optomechanical and robotic operations that are tightly synchronized with the operation of illumination, image acquisition, and fluidics subsystems.Verify the mechanical and electrical specifications of various motion stages, motors, and actuators by sourcing or building necessary fixtures and configuring or writing necessary software to acquire data.Work closely with software engineers and other hardware design engineers in a team environment to ensure successful integration of the solutions they develop.Work with motion control vendors for custom designed products ensuring optimal solution performance, cost, and development time.To Be Successful, You Will NeedLead the design, development and implementation of technical solutions for complex motion control projects, involving multiple domains.Participate in all phases of product development, including requirements definition, concept generation, detailed design, manufacturing process development, assembly, integration, verification, and validation testing.Manage a large scope of motion control design work including possible partnership with external partners.Create new product motion control architectures for next generation instruments.Conceptualize and examine complex electro mechanical assemblies, create theoretical models, conduct empirical confirmation & perform computer assisted simulations.Design and develop motion control parts and assemblies, with careful consideration for mechanical design, kinematics, materials (plastics & metals) and stress analysis.Create product functional and design specifications. Perform DFMEA on parts that are designed.Work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams to define requirements for new and current designs.Study and test product designs.Identify and research new vendors/processes to manufacture components.Assist in initial design of fixtures and processes to assemble components.Create new product assembly instructions.Develop and perform component verification testing and product validation testing.Support production of final product by troubleshooting process and component problems.Provide engineering support to Manufacturing, NPI, and Service to facilitate transfer of designs.Document, prepare and review patent submissions.Assess field reliability data and improve existing product designs as necessary.Shepherd projects through the design control process (design specification, design review, risk analysis, etc.), and support New Product Introduction personnel in initial builds.RequirementsPhD or a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or other relevant field, with 10+ years of experience in life science instrumentation, semiconductor equipment, and/or automation/robotics.Proven track record of taking new products from concept through design and into manufacturing.Experience programming and performance tuning of motion controllers for single- and multi-axis synchronous motion trajectories.Design experience of X,Y sub-micron positioning stages.Design experience of Z-stage for optical focus running.Systematic aptitude with an emphasis on theoretical fundamentals.High proficiency using software like 3D CAD to design mechanisms; SolidWorks preferred (3D design & surfacing), Finite Element Analysis (such as SolidWorks Simulation).Comfortable in examining electrical assemblies and sensors.Comfortable with all phases of the product development lifecycle including design, implementation, debugging, verification, qualification, and transfer.Excellent communication and documentation skills.Comfortable operating machine shop equipment.Proven understanding of component selection criteria, and design for reliability and manufacturability.Experience with process development and creating assembly instructions.Proficient in structural, thermal, and vibration/modal FEA and Statistical Analysis.Knowledge of analysis tools such as Python or Matlab.Nice To HaveProject Management experience a plus.Machining, casting, sheetmetal & high volume injection molding experience a plus.Proficient in SolidWorks and EPDM/PDMWorks.Experienced in generating mechanical drawings.Knowledge of and experience with electronic document control systems (ECO process).Can independently identify design problems and come up with suggested solutions.Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team including chemistry and molecular biology.Knowledge of a variety of manufacturing techniques and processes.Experience operating machine tools.Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.Ability to communicate in a clear, concise, personable manner.High energy and interest in working in a dynamic environment.Hands-on, can-do approach.Knowledge of software programming or electrical engineering design.3+ years of programming in Java, C++, Python or related language experience.Experience with signal processing, conditioning, filtering.About 10x GenomicsAt 10x Genomics, accelerating our understanding of biology is more than a mission for us.
