Job Description - Nurse Manager Radiation Oncology (3303892)Nurse Manager Radiation Oncology - (3303892)Accountable for the facilitation of excellence in patient care delivery, operational efficiencies, and compliance with hospital and regulatory policies and practices. This full-time role has managerial oversight for Radiation Oncology.PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIESClinical Practice

In collaboration with APP/MD team, perform assessment of patients for appropriateness for radiation.Appropriately administer medications to patients.Perform ancillary procedures (e.g. port flushes, phlebotomy/sample collections, dressing changes, etc.).Provide relevant education to patients and family members as applicable to their radiation treatments.Ensure patient encounters are appropriately documented and completed.Serve and support triage responsibilities within Radiation.Ensure In-Basket messages are addressed and/or appropriately triaged.Establish and maintain an environment that is patient/family focused and sensitive to the diverse needs of patients and staff.Promote and support staff development. Schedule and facilitate educational offerings with both internal and external speakers. Design and implement educational offerings and policies for new procedures in the department. Ensure HealthStream assignments for staff cover the content they need to complete their jobs.Provide daily supervision, support, and assessment of care, to nurses and support staff to facilitate the delivery of high-quality patient care.Establish effective accountability systems to assure patient care standards are met.Ensure all patient care responsibilities will be performed consistent with age-specific criteria.Assist staff and leadership in the provision of nursing care using, but not limited to, the philosophy of MGH Patient Care Services and regulatory agency standards.Perform other duties as needed or assigned.Resource Management

Promote economy of time, efficiencies, and productivity for the nursing staff and support teams, including monitoring and facilitating workflows and staffing levels daily across the 4 areas of rad onc on the main campus.In collaboration with the Nurse Director, evaluate and develop staffing patterns to support patient care needs and unit operations.Lead time off/vacation requests/weekly schedules/payroll.Collaborate on patient care assignments based on staff competencies, patient acuity, illness complexity, and knowledge of technology.Collaborate with the Nursing Director regarding budgetary, supply, and equipment needs and priorities of the unit. Ensure each area of Rad Onc has the supplies needed to function properly.Make decisions that support appropriate use of human, fiscal, and environmental resources for patient care.Interview and hire candidates to fill vacant nursing, allied health positions and participate in the interview process to fill vacant leadership positions.Implement and provide staffing corrective action measures where appropriate.Collaborate, coordinate, and update as needed, staff orientation activities.Participate with the Nursing Leadership Team on annual reviews and on updates of position descriptions and proficiencies.Apply knowledge of current and relevant issues and changes in nursing, social and medical science to improve patient care and foster staff development.Collaborate with the leadership team on capital and personnel budget needs; monitor and supervise budget variances.Educate staff regarding department/center/program and hospital budgets to promote awareness of individual accountability and responsibility for department/center/program fiscal management.Manage physician schedule changes.Ensure the environment is conducive to patient care/clinical practice.Leadership

Promote interdisciplinary collaboration through effective communications and negotiations. Attend each disease center’s clinical collaboratives representing nursing. Member of radiation safety workgroup and quality meetings.Interpret and communicate to staff members all changes in standards of care, nursing practice activities, and hospital and departmental policies and procedures.Monitor compliance with policies and procedures. Monitor Bluesight 3 times a week for narcotic administration compliance.Participate and serve as a radiation representative in service line, hospital and entity-wide committees as a key member and leader of Radiation Oncology. Collaborate with all Rad Onc leaders across all Rad Onc sites within MGH and MGB.Investigate safety reports and/or complaints and initiate appropriate QI and resolution action(s).Participate in Quality and Safety initiatives, including root cause analysis, formulation and implementation of corrective action and monitoring of action outcomes.Support and coach unit Excellence Everyday Champions for Magnet and JCAHO readiness initiatives and activities.Communicate and document pertinent incidents, actions, and follow-up to the Nurse Director in a timely manner.Coordinate problem-solving activities with the staff and arrange meetings as needed.Conduct annual performance appraisals for staff – including staff competency assessments.Collaborate with Human Resource representatives regarding corrective action and initiate appropriate corrective action with employees.Collaborate with the Nurse Director to develop staff meeting agendas, conduct the meeting, and disseminate appropriate information to staff.Foster an environment where interdisciplinary collaboration related to patient care needs are paramount.Ensure a practice environment that maintains high professional standards of clinical care and conduct.Promote professional development of staff through the MGH Clinical Recognition Program, and other mechanisms, including specialty certification for nursing and support staff.Professional Development
