Machine Learning and AIThe Software Localization team empowers software engineers around the world to provide the highest quality localized experience for Apple’s international customers. We are responsible for the localization workflows in Xcode, framework-level support for localization and internal localization tools used to create high quality localizations across all of Apple’s software. We are in search of a creative, motivated, and passionate technical leader who has a robust understanding of Machine Translation (MT). An ideal candidate has the ability to lead diverse cross-functional efforts ranging from ML modeling and prototyping to validation and fine-tuning. You will leverage state-of-the-art NLP techniques using large language models (LLMs), generative AI, neural MT models to build the next generation of machine translation tooling for developers and translators. Strong engineering fundamentals and a passion for this area are required.DescriptionAs a Machine Translation Engineer in the Software Localization team, you will join a phenomenal team of passionate engineers to design, implement and qualify localization features across a wide variety of Apple’s products. We are looking for an exceptional candidate to help architect the future of machine translation using generative models. Your role is to ensure Apple and third-party developers using Xcode can deliver world-class software products to millions of users around the world. Your duties include:Leading the exploration and application of Large Language Models (LLMs) for performing translation tasksTranslating the latest research into high-quality systems and models that can be practically applied to further improve machine translationActively engaging in all aspects of model development, from ideation, training, experimentation to deployment.Collaborating with translation, localization quality, project management and engineering teams to develop and implement machine learning solutionsDeveloping and maintaining features, frameworks and tools to help facilitate the software translation processMinimum QualificationsKey QualificationsExperience with Machine Learning (ML), with a particular emphasis on Large Language Models (LLMs) and Machine Translation (MT)Proven ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply cutting-edge research into consumer-oriented productsComprehensive knowledge and hands-on experience with fine-tuning approaches and training modelsExperience adapting pre-trained LLMs for downstream tasksProficiency using open-source ML toolkits and frameworks (e.g. PyTorch, TensorFlow, OpenNMT)Strong programming skills in Python, C or C++Preferred QualificationsEducation & ExperienceBS, MS or PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or Machine Learning (or equivalent experience)Additional RequirementsExperience in software localization / internationalizationFamiliarity with localization standards and technologies (Unicode, XLIFF, ITS Rules, ICU, etc.)Native-level foreign language skills in reading, writing and speakingExperience in scripting languages (e.g. bash, Ruby, Perl)Knowledge of Computational LinguisticsPassion for Apple products, international user experiences and developer localization experiencesPublished research in the field of Machine Learning or AIExperience using Xcode to build software for Apple’s platformsProficiency with Objective-C and Swift programming languagesProficiency with Apple’s development APIs (SwiftUI, Foundation, etc.)Experience or curiosity in languages and cultureComfortable working cross-functionally and cross-culturallyAt Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $143,100 and $264,200, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.Apple employees also have the opportunity to become an Apple shareholder through participation in Apple’s discretionary employee stock programs. Apple employees are eligible for discretionary restricted stock unit awards, and can purchase Apple stock at a discount if voluntarily participating in Apple’s Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
