Summary:Under general supervision of the Vice President of Marketing Communications plans, develops, and implements actions designed to achieve the department's key objectives, major projects, and strategies by directing public relations, media relations, crisis communications, and issues management. Leads the video production operation of the department. Supervises a work team which includes public relations officers and video producers.Responsibilities:Leads and directs the team process and provides the project- and client-oriented delivery of services at the level of a director consistent with the department's annual work plan. Production and central support services include strategic public relations, crisis communications, media relations, issues management, publications, and brand journalism efforts. Client support services include institutional and service line work plan development and implementation. Collaboratively develops plan with team members to implement the portion of the departmental work plan for which the team is responsible.Maintains regular contact with Lifespan affiliates and departmental clients to gather news and information about client activities, achievements, and plans. Develops relationships with and provides consultation to Lifespan President and CEO, Hospital Presidents, Senior Vice Presidents, and other key executives. May have similar regular contacts with external stakeholder individuals or groups. Shares information gained by such contacts with others in the department to promote quality improvement and the desired level of program development.Helps establish and revise departmental policies as well as policies throughout the institution related to the media.Directs the conduct of projects consistent with the department's process for defining project priorities, schedules, key messages, budgets, and evaluations:Participates in projects and client-support assignments in accordance with the marketing/communications staff performing research, writing, editing, and advising on matters of media relations, issues management, social media communications, and other work necessary to ensure successful project completion.Coordinates the collective planning, review, and information-exchange process of the assigned work team by conducting regular team meetings.Implements short-term and long-term media relation strategies for each partner's website.Continuously expands and maintains quality of online newsrooms on each of the partner websites to ensure that journalists have access to press releases, fact sheets, photography, and videos that promote the hospitals' services and positive image.Ensures the completion of client surveys to determine satisfaction with consultative services provided, adherence to schedule and budget, and to elicit suggestions for methods to improve similar future efforts, regularly reviewing survey results with members of the work team.Works with department team to provide communications strategy and planning, surveying, and program evaluation to support site-specific marketing/communications.Plans and directs that portion of the departmental operating budget allocated to the team's assigned area of responsibility.Prepares and submits regular reports depicting the status by project and group of work-in-progress.Provides leadership to the video team to ensure that marketing and brand journalism materials are created in a timely manner and reflect the goals of the department's annual marketing plans.Plans, supports, and implements special assignments to communicate with the media and other affected groups and, as assigned, acts as official media spokesperson for the system or its affiliates. May represent the system in various forums before external committees and work groups.Oversees the planning of Lifespan press conferences and similar events.Develops expertise in and monitors national, regional, and local trends affecting assigned issues (such as the status of not-for-profit tax-exempt organizations, executive compensation, community benefit activities, labor relations, and the like), contributing to the department's issues files for assigned issues. Provides support and guidance to others related to assigned issues and serves as a resource to clients and the media.Provides consultation to social media team on how to respond to controversial posts, etc.Supervises interviews, hires, orients, assigns work to, appraises, regularly communicates with, and prepares performance standards and development plans for all subordinate staff.Provides on-call support seven days a week to public relations officers.Qualifications:Education:Baccalaureate degree in journalism, communications, or a related field is required. Advanced degree in a related field is desirable. Depending on primary services performed, required skills may include one or more areas of professional concentration such as journalism, publications development and management, issues analysis and management, media relations, or specific service-line communications programming.Experience:Ten years progressively more responsible experience and proven accomplishment in director-level communications management, journalism, organizing, corporate or agency writing, editing or account servicing, as well as media relations in a similar healthcare setting.Supervisory Responsibility:Supervises up to 10 FTEs.Lifespan is an Equal Opportunity / Affirmative Action employer.
