The Organization

BCAN was founded in 2005 and is the premier national advocacy organization devoted to advancing bladder cancer research and supporting those impacted by this all-too-common disease. The mission of BCAN is to increase public awareness about bladder cancer, advance bladder cancer research, and provide free educational and support services for the bladder cancer community.

Each year, BCAN provides thousands of patients, caregivers and the medical community with the educational resources and support services they need to navigate their bladder cancer journeys. Support resources offered by BCAN include its robust website with hundreds of pages about the disease, twice-yearly in-person patient and caregiver summits, webinars, podcasts, print publications and its Survivor to Survivor program. This program matches newly diagnosed bladder cancer patients with those who have undergone similar diagnoses and who lend advice and a sympathetic ear.

BCAN works collaboratively with the medical and research professionals who are dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of bladder cancer. The staff at BCAN believe that today’s bladder cancer research will bring tomorrow’s cures. Since 2009, BCAN has committed more than $10 million in bladder cancer research through its various award programs. Many award recipients have done groundbreaking research that helps increase our understanding of the disease.

The Opportunity

The Board is committed to Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network continuing its highly successful track record of impact, since its founding and building on the extremely strong work of the current CEO, who arrived in 2016. Through a carefully planned leadership transition and moving forward, the Board seeks a leader who can gather diverse perspectives and positively guide the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network’s continued impact and results while also identifying potential challenges and uncovering untapped opportunities.

This requires the CEO to have excellent strategic, organizational leadership, and fundraising skills. With passion that inspires all constituents, the CEO must be capable of developing a more equitable and inclusive community connected to bladder cancer treatment and research; continuing to increase the scale of research initiatives; deepen awareness of bladder cancer; and increase BCAN’s donor base and funding.

The Role:

Reports to: Board of DirectorsLocation: BCAN has an office in Bethesda, Maryland and staff work hybrid in-office schedules. The CEO, as a critical culture carrier, is expected to spend significant time building in-person relationships with colleagues.

Strategic Leadership

Engage the Board of Directors in its important governance role by openly communicating about the organization’s opportunities, strategic choices and progress toward goals.

Lead the Board and staff to chart an inspiring, future course with sound financial and operational underpinnings, building on BCAN’s strengths, track record, and authentic connections to its community.

Establish and guide the team to meet short- and long-term goals and objectives.

Fundraising and External Relationships

Serving as BCAN’s chief spokesperson, champion the organization’s mission externally to a variety of stakeholders, including survivors, patients and families, as well as the cancer advocacy, medical and healthcare communities, and government.

In collaboration with the Board of Directors, personally attract and cultivate current, as well as future leadership donors.

Develop and execute comprehensive marketing and development approaches that will enhance revenue from individual donors, foundations, corporate partners, and special events; ensure that funds are strategically allocated.

Organizational Leadership and Management

Recruit, lead, manage, mentor, and motivate a committed, passionate staff (16 currently); develop the optimal organizational structure, roles, and responsibilities that meet BCAN’s evolving needs.

Personally model, and drive, a culture of operational excellence, collaboration, and accountability.

Ensure sound financial and operational oversight of the organization: financial budgets, forecasts, priorities, controls, and investments; audit and tax reporting (to regulatory authorities, donors and the Board of Directors); and insurance.

As BCAN grows, adapt systems, processes, and policies. In particular, oversee the development of next level of effective HR approaches and IT/financial systems.
