Position Summary:

Pyxis Oncology (‘PYXS’ or ‘Company’) is seeking an innovative, methodical and collaborative Principal Scientist, Translational Bioinformatics, to join our Translational Medicine team. The successful candidate will develop and spearhead translational bioinformatics using omics and high-dimensional data to assist identification from clinical samples predictive and pharmacodynamic biomarkers of response and resistance to immune oncology (IO) and antibody drug conjugate (ADC) clinical stage therapeutics candidates. The candidate will also assist in identification of novel targets/pathways, development of biomarker assays, selection of preclinical models and patients, identification of resistance mechanism and combination strategies. As a Principal Scientist, Translational Bioinformatics, the candidate will apply machine learning and statistical algorithms to expand the capability and capacity of existing PYXS platforms investigate efficacy and MOA, leveraging public as well as internal data sets for target and indication selection. The ideal candidate will be creative and highly critical in their approach to science, with excellent interpersonal skills and a team-centric mindset. The candidate must also be able to work independently and with minimal direction and enjoy the fast-paced and ever-dynamic environment.

Responsibilities:

Lead and develop bioinformatics infrastructure and capability at Pyxis Oncology

Integrate biomarker data from multiple outputs for correlations to clinical metadata and other parameters

Inform biomarker strategy from early research to clinical programs for IO and ADC pipelines

Serve as subject matter expert for preclinical, clinical and business teams

Identify novel targets and pathways in oncology

Application of machine learning to the development of drugs

Support biomarker discovery efforts across programs, leveraging in-house, public, and external data

Utilize and maintain in-house developed algorithms for the analysis of large-scale ‘omics data

Maintain in-house pipelines for the processing of ‘omics data

Assist with experimental design to aid robust downstream analyses and interpret data

Prepare summaries and present results to internal and external stakeholders with various backgrounds

Collaborate closely with scientists across R&D to develop experiments and interpret data

Perform other related duties and/or ad hoc projects as required or as assigned by manager

Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, human genetics, biostatistics or related field, with 5+ years of industry experience utilizing bioinformatics to develop biomarker strategies from clinical insights.

Experience working with clinical and biomarker datasets for translational purposes or to address biological questions.

Broad omics experience is preferred.

Strong communication skills are essential to this role and thus previous experience with cross-functional leadership or management is preferred.

Experience managing internal and external stakeholders and vendors.

Experience in any of the following areas is preferred: machine learning, digital image analysis, proteomics and metabolomics data analysis, genetic perturbation, genomics laboratory setup and workflow.

Familiarity with oncology biomarkers and machine learning applications is a plus.

Expertise in applying bioinformatics algorithms in R or Python to address translational and biological questions.

In-depth experience analyzing, interpreting and visualizing RNA and DNA data including single cell sequencing, bulk sequencing, microarray and mutation, indel, amplification, SNP, fusion calling.

Proficiency with AWS and familiarity preferred with managing AWS resources.

Familiarity with good coding practices, including version control, custom R package management, and R virtual environments (renv).

Ability to navigate and thrive in a fast-paced and constantly evolving environment.

Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Able to work in the United States without sponsorship.

The starting full-time annual base salary for this position is estimated to range between $164,000 to $202,000 (USD). The final compensation package offered to a successful candidate will consider a number of factors including but not limited to prior experience, relevant expertise, education, skills, qualifications and certifications, business needs, and market conditions.
