Summary Description:

Responsible for transportation, logistics, dock, planning, and donation related functions/activities to meet the needs of all retail stores, aftermarket sales (auction, outlet) as well as commodities and salvage sales. This position reports directly to the Sr. Vice President of Sales Operations & Marketing and works in concert with the Retail Sales Director.

Exemplary Duties / Responsibilities:

Manage flow of all donated goods, including the movement and storage of raw materials, work-in-process inventory, and finished goods from point of origin to point of consumption.

Oversees the entire lifecycle of merchandise from point of donation, delivery to retail stores, Last Chance operations, bailing, salvage and commodities.

Maintains all statistic information and records sufficient to maintain and/or improve production capacity.

Responsible for all human resource procedures within the department including (but not limited to) staff scheduling, providing ongoing training, performance management, and administering all disciplinary actions.

Directly manages Department Leads, Dock Workers, and Truck Drivers.

Develop and implements new methods to meet workload demands.

Responsible for all departmental safety, security and loss prevention measures.

Has full responsibility for the dock, including training and instructing dock material handlers in correct loading, unloading, and handling methods for all types of material and merchandise, and appropriate use of all equipment.

Sources leads and new vendors for after-market products (commodities); communicates terms, finance approval processes and ensures pre-payment of all loads.

Arranges and schedules pickups of after-market commodities and product with vendors; coordinates.

Oversees and maintains compliance regarding D.O.T., O.S.H.A., and E.P.A.

Generates required reporting of CalRecycle, D.O.T., O.S.H.A., and E.P.A. as required by regulating bodies.

Maintains record retention as required by Policy & Regulations, including state inspections.

Logistics:

Oversees the selection of travel routes to maximize efficiency of drivers' time by combining shipments, trash, and consolidating warehousing and distribution.

Oversees the training and develops drivers and material handlers in the appropriate methods of transporting and processing merchandise.

Oversees and emphasizes careful handling and protective measures to prevent damage and loss.

Ensures that drivers maintain approved schedules and requires adherence to same, making frequent compliance checks.

Ensures dock equipment (including but not limited to balers, forklifts, crusher, etc.), vehicles, tools, material handling equipment in safe, clean and dependable working condition at all times.

Prepares maintenance schedules of equipment and trucks and requires adherence to them.

Maintains records and prepares reports as necessary for use within the department.

Dispatches vehicles to ensure most effective use of available resources.

Prepares schedule for drivers and material handlers.

Decides priority of user requests for transportation.

Responsive to special requests and needs.

Conducts regular surveillance and makes administrative checks to determine reliability of drivers’ meeting schedules and working in compliance with procedures and instruction.

Completes necessary paperwork for DMV compliance.

Meets with suppliers to discuss performance metrics, to provide performance feedback, or to discuss production forecasts or changes.

Controls/monitors trash expenses & leads the Waste Reduction Task Force.

Trains staff to meet internal/external customer service standards.

Designs and/or implements business strategies adapted to changing market conditions, new business opportunities, or cost reduction strategies.

Conducts or oversees the conduct of life cycle analyses to determine the environmental impacts of products, processes, or systems.

Designs, implements, or oversees programs to ensure products are recycled, reused, or responsibly disposed.

Evaluates and selects information or other technology solutions to improve tracking and reporting of materials or products distribution, storage, or inventory.

Identifies opportunities to reuse or recycle materials to minimize consumption of new materials, minimize waste, or to convert wastes to by-products.

Assists with collection and product needed to meet budget goals for fundraising events.

Ensures all safety standards are met, conducts monthly safety meetings, audits associates PPE compliance. Other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience:

High school, technical or trade school with appropriate work experience will be considered. College preferred.

Minimum two (2) years management experience in a transportation or warehouse environment directly supervising a fleet; additional experience in recycling and/or salvage industry preferred.

Positive work history.

Experience with trucks and automobiles to the extent that he/she is able to identify malfunctions.

Knowledge:

Understanding of product movement, storage and handling.

Understanding of current DOT rules, regulations, and requirements.

Knowledgeable in fleet/commercial vehicle maintenance methods.

Working knowledge of OSHA and EPA regulations, safety and recycling standards.
