Position Focus:Since 1971, Yale Health Center has been the principal provider of acute, specialty, and primary care for Yale University students, faculty, staff, retirees, and their families. Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer at Yale Health and in collaboration with the Executive Team and the Associate Chief Medical Officer, Primary Care, provide clinical, strategic and management leadership for Yale Health Mental Health Services for faculty, staff, students and dependents. The Associate Chief Medical Officer, Mental Health Services (ACMO-MH) will have oversight of the clinical activities of mental health and counseling service delivery at Yale Health and business management responsibility for the mental health vendor network. The position fulfills a 20% practice effort of clinical-based patient care while devoting approximately 80% effort to clinical, administrative and strategic leadership. Represents Yale Health to the University, Yale Medicine and Yale New Haven Hospital and other stakeholders. Promotes and supports the goals and objectives of Yale Health.

Essential Duties

The Associate Chief Medical Officer of Mental Health directs and ensures the clinical excellence of mental health services delivered to Yale Health faculty, staff, students, and dependents. The ACMO-MH supervises five direct reports and is responsible for the performance of a clinical staff of approximately 70 providers (Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Social Workers, Advanced Practice Providers)—Upholds Yale Health’s commitment to patient-centered care.

The ACMO-MH will supervise the provision of optimal clinical care, quality, value, and service to Yale Health patients. Services include psychotherapy, psychiatry, care coordination, and University outreach. The position oversees the Sexual Harassment and Assault Response & Education (SHARE) clinicians and staff.

Advances clinical model innovation. Uses metrics to provide feedback and drive improvement in quality of care, access, productivity, teamwork, and patient experience. Uses data analytics and technology to identify opportunities for efficiency and responsible management of Yale Health’s staff and financial resources.

Partners with university stakeholders, serves on university committees, and aligns with campus mental health and wellness efforts. Coordinates mental health response to campus emergencies.

Oversees third-party managed care vendor that administers local provider network to ensure that the benefit is administered effectively and efficiently on the concepts of medical necessity, access, and evidence-based care for Yale’s diverse population, including pediatric and adolescent members.

Serves as principal Yale Health leader to ensure network adequacy, inpatient and outpatient care access, and appropriate care transitions. Monitors key performance indicators and business processes.

Cultivates a high-quality team of clinical providers, promoting standards of professionalism and service for the clinical areas of responsibility. Directs the activities and professional development of direct reports and clinical staff, including measures to encourage retention and mitigate burnout. Oversees departmental training programs in conjunction with Yale Departments of Psychiatry and Psychology.

Optimizes partnerships with other Yale Health clinical departments for mental health care service delivery, including care coordination, mental health screenings, and collaborative care partnerships. Collaborates with ACMO-Primary Care, Chiefs of departments, and specialty services to provide optimal healthcare delivery to Yale Health members.

Assists the Chief Medical Officer on projects and implementation of organizational priorities in clinical quality improvement and process redesign. Serves on standing and ad hoc committees and teams, including Executive Council, Chiefs, Pharmacy & Therapeutics, and Quality & Safety.

Collaborates with Department Managers and the Finance Department in preparing and monitoring budgets for clinical areas using data analytics. Fosters financial literacy among clinical staff to promote high-value care delivery.

Demonstrates excellence and commitment to patient care by providing clinical care to patients for two sessions per week.

Recruits and makes recommendations for staffing, hires, and promotions. Participates in interviewing and selecting clinician candidates for appointment to the clinical staff of Yale Health with the goal of a diverse workforce. Conducts regular meetings with direct reports and teams and fosters a collaborative and positive work environment.

Informs staff of institutional policies and procedures and ensures compliance with all clinically relevant regulatory and accrediting requirements.

Required Education and Experience : Graduation from an accredited medical/graduate school (MD, DO, PhD, PsyD) and completion of post-graduate training and a minimum of 2 years of previous mental health clinical leadership and management experience, preferably in a university setting or a healthcare system such as an HMO or ACO.

Ability to collaborate effectively with clinical and operational leadership, management and staff at all levels. Evidence of an ability to build and manage a diverse team of providers.

Excellent written, oral communication and presentation skills. Ability to adapt communication style to address the needs of individuals and cultivate relationships at all levels throughout the University.

Required Licenses or Certifications : Licensure and certifications appropriate to the specialty, including board certification, if applicable. Currently licensed in the State of Connecticut or eligible to obtain and hold a State of Connecticut provider license as well as any applicable State or Federal DEA or narcotics registrations (based on licensure).
