An Overview

The Department of Transportation & Environmental Services (T&ES) Public Works Services Division seeks an Inspector III to handle managerial tasks in various public works settings. The role involves supervising daily operations and activities within the Stormwater Section of Public Works Services. This technical position focuses on inspecting BMPs, as well as storm and sanitary sewers, and is carried out under the guidance of the PWS Stormwater Engineer.

What You Should Bring

In-depth knowledge of construction of clay, concrete, ductile iron, PVC storm drain and sanitary sewers, and asphalt and concrete for restoration. Skills related to reliable inspections of infrastructure, and the ability to work well with a variety of stakeholders.

Opportunity

Performs more advanced BMP regulatory and Stormwater maintenance engineering inspections.Collaborate daily with the stormwater engineer and PWS team members to manage and coordinate tasks. Generate Work Orders (WOs), track the progress of associated activities, and produce reports.Assist with construction activities involving various utility companies and other City Departments.Participate in field and office meetings, offering essential technical support to the BMPs crew supervisor.Review plans and specifications to verify that they adhere to City Standards, the Department of Environmental Quality, and the Virginia Department of Transportation regulations.Coordinate and work with the T&ES and related divisions to accept the new BMPs for the maintenance responsibilities, conduct post-construction inspections, and process the paperwork accordingly.Manage construction activities, including overseeing construction agreements, change orders, addendums, and amendments. Resolve construction conflicts and apply the necessary knowledge and skills to implement solutions.Collaborate with and attend meetings with the PWS Stormwater team and the broader stormwater team and provide reports on the inspection and construction of stormwater projects.Act as a liaison for property owners and contractors.Assist with inclement weather events (snow removal operations, severe weather events).Perform related work as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

To qualify for this position, all candidates must possess a High School Diploma or GED; completion of vocational or college-level courses in surveying principles and methods, civil engineering, or building construction; five years of experience in a responsible, paraprofessional engineering position in construction surveying; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.To be considered the preferred candidate, you must possess considerable experience in the construction and/or inspection of BMPs, storm drain and sanitary sewers, and asphalt and concrete for restoration. Knowledge of principles and practices in Civil engineering, stormwater and sanitary sewer construction and inspection methods, and the ability to oversee contractors and secure their cooperation, as well as the general public, is essential. Additionally, the ability to prepare comprehensive estimates, reports and maintain accurate records is required.The candidate must possess the VDEQ Erosion & Sediment Control Inspector and Stormwater Inspector Certifications or have the ability to obtain both certifications within one year of employment. This position requires the successful completion of a pre-employment background check and physical examination.
