Job DescriptionThe NAU Theatre Technical Director, Sr., under the general supervision of the Department Chair, is the primary director of the scene shop, facilities manager, and department technical director. This position supervises the scene shop, and its associated budgets, oversees student employees, and collaboratively works with other faculty/staff to assure the delivery of successful productions within the Department of Theatre. This position also teaches one core curriculum course, TH123 Stagecraft and the related lab TH113, with the potential to teach more advanced courses.

Responsibilities

Production and Design - 35%

Oversee and coordinate the building of all scenery for Department of Theatre productions.

Creates technical drawings, show bids, and other production paperwork.

Oversee and support theatre facility rental contracts including scheduling, ensuring safety procedures are being followed, and assure that each production has lighting, sounds, and staging as needed.

Schedule, lead, and support the production/design meetings.

Maintain the production calendar in collaboration with the Department Chair.

Facilities Management - 20%

Maintain the scene shop, stage and storage facilities, tools, and equipment for both the Clifford E. White (CEW) Theatre and the Studio Theatre.

Act as the Department of Theatre building liaison (co-building manager). Assure that maintenance requests are submitted and are completed efficiently and correctly.

Assure that proper inspections of Theatre facility are maintained as needed.

Collaborate with other shop staff (Costume and Lighting) to ensure the proper maintenance and safety of their facilities.

Act as the first contact for outside rentals of the CEW. In collaboration with the rental groups, assess their needs and facilitates the rental contract working with the Academic Program Coordinator, University Contracts and the Finance Team to ensure the documents are completed in a timely manner.

Staff the rental contracts with the appropriate needed personnel.

Course Instruction - 20%

Lead and instruct students in one core course on Stagecraft, Production Practicum and or Stage Management, along with the associated lab.

Responsible for managing the associated lab that correlates with the Stagecraft course each semester.

Creates the syllabus, mentors students, and facilitates an active learning environment regarding theater production.

Purchasing and Budget Oversight - 10%

Purchase all supplies needed for construction of sets and properties as well as other materials and supplies as authorized and maintain a NAU purchasing card.

Assist with the development of the shop budget and verify that expenses are within budget throughout the year.

Supervision - 10%

Supervise, direct, and assist student employees in the scene shop and during production workshops including maintaining time sheets, training, and creating a safe work environment.

Schedule, assign, and manage crew assignments and coordinate with Theatre faculty on production workshops.

Manage the House Management staff including ensuring student training, student employees, coordinating the shifts as outlined in the House Management Handbook.

Complete and manage student wage timesheet approvals.

Other - 5%

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in relevant field.

3-5 years of relevant experience.

A combination of related education, experience and training may be used as an equivalent to the above educational Minimum Requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

BA or MFA in Theatre with an emphasis in Technical Theatre.

Experience working in university Theatre programs.

Experience teaching theatre courses at the college/university level.

Demonstrated commitment to a general studies based theatrical education and first-generation student experience and success.

Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in curriculum, recruitment, production on a college campus and in their profession through DEIJ training.

Demonstrated interest in representing diverse voices of the global majority in all aspects (classroom and production) of the curriculum.

Knowledge, Skills, & AbilitiesKnowledge

Knowledge of stage management principles and practices.

Knowledge of records administration and maintenance techniques and procedures.

Knowledge of the maintenance and safe operation of shop and stage equipment.

Knowledge of modern scenery and prop construction techniques, practices and materials.

Knowledge of safety requirements and regulations in use of common construction materials.

Skills

Skill of technical direction, shop and facility management.

Skill with lighting and sound technology, stage rigging, welding, stage management, scenic art, and a weapons master would be considered a plus.

Coordination of activities and establishing priorities.

Program development and execution; planning, developing, and implementing short and long-term goals.

Stage production methods and techniques.

Abilities

SalarySalary range begins at $53,769. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.
