Internal Communications Director

Alliance Defending Freedom is looking for a highly skilled

Internal Communications Director

to join us in our Lansdowne, VA office. As the Internal Communications Director, you are a vital part of the Communications Team. In this role, you will report to the Vice President of Communications and are responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive internal communications strategy that ensures the consistent flow of information across a 400+ person domestic and international team. The Internal Communications Director will provide timely, relevant, inspirational messaging to Team Members from a variety of sources and keep Team Members up to date on important developments—both internal (HR/executive news) and external (breaking news on cases and ministry efforts in our issue areas). This role is critical to ensuring that the entire ADF team is on the same page in terms of strategic priorities.

Your Essential Responsibilities:

In this position, you will:

Work with the Vice President of Communications to develop and execute a comprehensive internal communications strategy that ensures the consistent flow of information across a team of 400+ members located across multiple domestic and international offices and a widespread team of remote workers.

Ensure clear, timely, and regular communication to Team Members to:

a). Ensure engagement and alignment with the ministry’s strategic priorities.

b). Keep all Team Members up to date on internal news (such as HR and Executive Leadership Team announcements, and policy information).

c). Relay breaking news on cases and ministry efforts in our issue areas.

Clearly communicate that ministry successes are a result of an entire team.

Use internal communications as a tool to meet the strategic priorities of the ministry’s various departments and initiatives; serve as a partner to key teams (e.g. Human Resources, Information Technology, Legal) and develop targeted internal communications plans for these stakeholders’ primary initiatives.

Identify and establish appropriate tools and channels for Team Member engagement and communication, including Team Member gatherings, CEO/Executive Leadership Team communications, emails, and more.

Direct the successful execution of a bi-monthly live event which Team Members attend in person in multiple locations and virtually all around the world. Coordinate the content and lineup (including executives).

Direct the creation and distribution of video messages from the CEO or designated spokesperson (planned for every other month and as needed).

Maintain an Internal Communications editorial calendar; write and edit regular content for Team Member communications. Solicit and edit content from multiple teams for their mass communications or inclusion in communications to the entire team.

Ensure that all internal communications are aligned with the ADF brand and messaging.

Serve as a resource for internal teams needing to communicate across the entire team or a large subset of it. Establish tools, templates, and guidelines; work with teams to develop appropriate internal communications plans for their initiatives and efforts; and review content.

Create actionable metrics for measuring Internal Communications effectiveness.

Skills you need to succeed:

Knowledge of:

Basic Microsoft Office software.

Internal communications best practices.

Demonstrated Proficiency in:

Writing and editing clear and concise communications that are aligned with brand and message guidance; experience writing for a variety of stakeholders for a variety of delivery mechanisms including email and speeches/talking points.

Planning and executing effective communications strategies.

Communicating in a timely fashion.

Managing multiple projects concurrently, prioritizing, and achieving deadlines and goals.

Managing executive-level communications.

Working effectively both cross-team and independently.

Ability to:

Serve as a trusted and effective conduit of information.

Develop and maintain strong cross-team relationships and work across teams.

Intake information and identify what is appropriate for a target audience.

Simplify complex issues and ideas into clear, concise, and engaging content that helps users understand why they should care, how it affects them, and, when applicable, what action they should take.

Think creatively, problem-solve, and be flexible.

Take initiative and work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

Education and/or experience:

7+ years of communications experience, including 3+ years of experience in internal communications.

5+ years of management experience preferred.

Communications experience in a mid-sized organization (400+ employees) preferred.

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in communications or related fields.
