JOB SUMMARY:

SouthStar is seeking a knowledgeable and results-driven Financial Trader to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for working with their counterpart in SouthStar’s physical operations group to optimize profitability and manage risks associated with storage and swing positions in various deregulated retail gas markets across the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest regions. Additionally, this position will support the growth of SouthStar’s green energy initiatives, helping to identify and acquire environmental commodity products needed to sustain and grow the Company’s green product portfolio.

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Develop, execute and manage financial trading strategies to optimize SouthStar’s storage assets across the Midcontinent and Mid-Atlantic regions.

Develop, execute and continuously monitor hedging strategies to manage swing exposure considering historical market volatility, the fundamental outlook for natural gas prices in each market served, and the potential impact to SouthStar’s net income given stressed tested scenarios of potential price & weather outcomes.

Collaborate with the Director, Physical Trading to determine SSE’s physical exposures and associated strategies each month in order to achieve the objectives of maximizing the return on storage assets while mitigating swing risks associated with firm retail delivery requirements.

Reassess and reposition SouthStar’s swing and storage strategies intra-month in response to changes in market fundamentals, changes in the expected behavior of SouthStar’s retail full requirements portfolio and predicted fluctuations in HDD’s relative to initial forecast.

Manage SouthStar’s portfolio of environmental commodities to meet the forecasted volume & margin requirements of the Company’s retail and wholesale products teams.

Collaborate with internal stakeholders to identify opportunities and support efforts to expand green product offerings.

Identify unanticipated exposures, presenting alternative hedging strategies (taking the Risk Management Policy [RMP] into consideration) to mitigate those exposures and successfully achieve profitability while staying within the limits of the Company RMP.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Required:

Bachelor's degree in Economics, Finance, Accounting, Business, or a related field. A Master's degree or additional certifications (e.g., CFA, ERP) is a plus.

Related Work Experience:

Required:

Minimum of 15 years of experience in financial or physical trading in the energy industry. Knowledge of environmental commodity markets is a plus.

Specific Skills & Knowledge:

Required:

Direct experience quantifying, managing and optimizing physical commodity exposure with relevant financial derivatives.

Ability to track rapidly changing regulated and voluntary compliance market standards and practices.

Understanding of trade related accounting principles, including cash flow hedge accounting requirements.

Excellent analytical and quantitative skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and market signals.

Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with a variety of stakeholders including senior leadership.

Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Self-motivated and able to work independently as well as part of a team.

Commitment to ethical trading practices and a strong understanding of compliance requirements, where applicable.

Preferred:

Working knowledge of ICE, Bloomberg and/or OpenLink Software.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

Hybrid work environment, in the office/on-site 3 days per week, and subject to change as needed.
