The Spanish Interpreter provides medical interpretation for clinical and non-clinical encounters to enable communication between patients and families who are limited English proficient and/or hearing impaired and clinicians and other hospital staff. Interpretation will be provided in person or by telephone in compliance with National Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics, Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital policies and procedures, and Interpreter Services guidelines to ensure patient safety and access to quality care.Responsibilities include but are not limited to:Responsible for answering requests effectively and in a timely manner for face to face or telephone interpretations for all types of encounters throughout the hospital with priority given to emergency and urgent requests.Interprets and transmits accurately and in understandable terms, complex medical information from medical providers to patients and families, including interpretation and written translation of consent forms, diagnoses, discharge plans and any other type of patient-related information. Interprets and transmits accurately and in understandable terms information from patients and families to medical providers.Assists patients and families throughout the hospital system in a professional and courteous manner. Provides this assistance to every patient and family who speak the Interpreter’s language and, if necessary, refers the patient to the appropriate resource.Serves as a resource to both patients and providers to contribute to successful outcomes.Maintains an environment that promotes collaborative work relationships and provides assistance to other Interpreter Services personnel as needed.Accepts and processes requests for interpreter services. This task may include answering telephones, logging information, contacting interpreters from office files and/or other approved sources, and securing follow-up in a timely manner.Independently resolves most issues that arise in their daily responsibilities, answers questions about protocols and makes appropriate referrals without direct supervision.Maintains complete and accurate records of services rendered for all patient and family encounters.Performs other related duties as required.Grade: 150Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital, an affiliate of Mass General Brigham, is committed to supporting patient care, research, teaching, and service to the community. High School Diploma or equivalent required.National Certification required.Prior training of medical terminology and interpreting skills.Fluency in English, both written and verbal, and Spanish required.Health care related experience in a position of direct patient contact.Knowledge of culture-specific care.Two years of health care related experience in a position of direct patient contact preferred.Staff adheres to all I CARE Standards.Strong ability to concentrate, detail oriented and possess cultural sensitivity regarding their patient, transmits all information as accurately as possible.Strong linguistic and interpreting skills.Strong interpersonal skills in difficult and demanding situations.Ability to follow directions with minimal supervision.High level of customer service and team building.Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital is an Affirmative Action Employer.
