Position Summary
This is a Non-Benefited position and not eligible for City benefits.
The GIS Intern is responsible for providing assistance to staff within the Engineering Division of the Department of Public Works: Capital Improvement Section and the Traffic Section. Duties anticipated include project plan reviews, project meeting attendance, project inspections, field data gathering, and project inspections as needed.
This position will work, on average, less than 20 hours per week for a specific period of time.
Education, Training, Experience, Certifications, Licenses and Registrations
Education / higher education: One year of college coursework in GIS, Geography, Planning, or Civil Engineering. Must be enrolled in a college or university at the time of application and during internship in a Bachelor's or Master's degree plan of study relevant to Engineering.

Minimum number of years of directly related experience: none
Education and/or experience preferences: none
Driver's License requirement: Infrequent DriverRegular Driver's License Required Endorsements: None
NoteFor any driver, driving record must always meet City driving and insurability standards.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge: a basic understanding of construction plans and specifications, mathematics, geometry and civil engineering standards and practices;
Skills: Must be able to successfully produce documents/spreadsheets, communicate via e-mail, or perform data entry as necessary to accomplish the essential functions of the position. Use of technology, equipment and software typically used in the office environment. Skills in reading and interpreting engineering plans or reports, technical engineering specifications, standards, methods and procedures.
Abilities: Research, read, interpret, and work from field notes, plans, specifications, and similar data
Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: This position works with engineering staff on various assignments on an as needed basis. This position must maintain harmonious, courteous, and understanding relationships, while fostering a collaborative teamwork environment.
Essential Functions
