The VP- Corporate Strategy role will lead the development and execution of Unum Group’s strategy, working closely with the senior executive team and P&L owners across the organization. This person will lead the process with the senior executive team regarding the annual Unum Group strategy refresh and the translation of that strategy into a key strategic portfolio of initiatives at the tactical level.The preferred location for the position is Chattanooga, TN.Principal Duties and ResponsibilitiesDrive the development and review of the Unum Group strategy, working closely with the senior executive team to set our financial and business long-term goals and aspirations, and to determine how we will continue to win in the markets where we play.Assess and identify Unum’s current competitive advantages, understand competitive environment, and determine what capabilities are required for Unum to continue to outperform competition in our core markets.Collaborate with P&L leaders across the enterprise to lead and develop targeted strategies for their respective areas, and systematically evaluate and analyze emerging opportunities to drive growth and innovation.Draw upon a thorough understanding of the marketplace, data-driven analysis, an “outside-in” perspective, and competitive dynamics to identify how we can deploy our expertise and capabilities in adjacent markets beyond existing core businesses determine which of these markets we should or should not play in to enable the corporation to achieve their long-term financial objectives.Build thorough analysis of the overall market and competitive environment and provide frequent and robust strategic insights to the business by leveraging research, external market perspectives, scenario planning and internal data.Work closely with the M&A team, Transformation Office, and Unum Ventures to develop pipeline of future organic and inorganic investments required to drive the implementation of Unum’s strategy and to execute on opportunities necessary to achieve our goals.Working closely with the Transformation Management Office, continue to evaluate the portfolio of strategic projects across the entire corporation, including our main business units. Monitor performance of these projects against pre-set goals and metrics.Identify, size, and evaluate growth opportunities within potential employer and consumer segments, partnership opportunities, and technology options to drive business advancement for Unum Group.Assess and strategize entry into new markets and geographies, leveraging global opportunities to enhance Unum Group’s international presence and growth.Support Chief Strategy Officer and P&L leaders with preparation for Board of Director meetings, developing strategic storylines and driving the creation of materials.Build credibility and establish effective working relationships with internal constituents throughout the organization, and be seen as a team player, trusted advisor and business partner to key stakeholders, building consensus and influencing outcomes, while challenging thinking.Manage the Corporate Strategy organization of 10+ individuals, drive a high-performance culture, build bench strength, continue to strengthen employee engagement, and ensure the highest ethical and compliance standards.Job SpecificationsBachelor’s Degree required; MBA preferred.15+ years’ experience in business strategy, business management, project management or consulting.Comfortable working at all levels in the organization from the C-suite to business unit professionals; team builder.Assimilate and adapt to Unum’s culture while managing change using strong influencing skills, while operating in a new/unfamiliar environment, and working effectively within a highly matrixed organization.Knowledge of the basic economics of financial services and business services companies.Focused on quick results and fast turnaround.Very strong problem structuring and analytical skills.Very strong financial modeling and presentation writing skills.Very strong verbal and written communication skills.Superior project management skills; strong collaborator.Fast paced, comfortable with tight deadlines, fast turnaround times and ambiguity.#LI-LM2024IN1The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.$184,100.00-$331,400.00Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not.
