May 17 2023This role can be based in San Francisco, Seattle, Boston, London (UK)The Onyx Research Data Platform organization represents a major investment by GSK R&D and Digital & Tech, designed to deliver a step-change in our ability to leverage data, knowledge, and prediction to find new medicines. We are a full-stack shop consisting of product and portfolio leadership, data engineering, infrastructure and DevOps, data / metadata / knowledge platforms, and AI/ML and analysis platforms, all geared toward:Building a next-generation, metadata- and automation-driven data experience for GSK's scientists, engineers, and decision-makers, increasing productivity and reducing time spent on "data mechanics"Providing best-in-class AI/ML and data analysis environments to accelerate our predictive capabilities and attract top-tier talentAggressively engineering our data at scale, as one unified asset, to unlock the value of our unique collection of data and predictions in real-timeOnyx Data Engineering is at the core of this mission, engineering the data assets and pipelines that power research through our Knowledge Graph, computational and AI/ML environments, and data-powered applications.This role is accountable for building and leading a high-functioning data engineering organization that:Delivers and operates best-in-class data processing pipelines in an event-based, scientific data ecosystem that allow us to treat all GSK research data as a single, unified data assetIngests and processes scientific datasets (across a vast array of datatypes including genomics, cell imaging, clinical imaging, scientific literature and more) at petabyte scale, to create:AI/ML- and analysis-ready data setsSemantic triples (subject-verb-object) to feed our Knowledge GraphComprehensive metadata to power data governance, provenance, and data understanding / reuse (including experiment design etc)Partners with the Data and Knowledge Platforms team to ensure the platforms enable best-in-class data engineering tools and ways of workingFollows and innovates on software engineering best practice and builds with demonstrable qualityThe Head of Data Engineering is an externally credible deep technical leader who is expected to provide a strong voice for development standards and modern architecture both within their organization and across the entirety of Onyx. Partnership with the other Onyx heads will be fundamental to the role: partnering with Engineering leads to ensure the entire Onyx platform operates on a unified architecture; partnering with Product to ensure we have a single roadmap designed to serve downstream delivery teams (in Onyx and elsewhere in R&D Digital and Tech) and the decision makers, scientists, and engineers of GSK R&D; and partnering with Program to ensure we are executing effectively and transparently.Key ResponsibilitiesRecruit, lead, develop, and retain a high-functioning organization of data engineersPartner with Onyx Data and Knowledge Platforms to ensure robust automation, operability, and support are core to all data engineering deliverablesPartner with the Product and Program teams to design and operate a world-class data delivery and knowledge extraction program and roadmap that serves our AI/ML and genomics research agendaPartner with Onyx Computing, Analysis, and AI/ML Platforms to build reusable "last-mile" transformation pipelines that enable "Data as a Resource": the simple flow of data into downstream computational environments while maintaining connection to our computational data governance strategyAlong with other Heads of Engineering on Onyx, provide a strong voice for modern architecture across the Onyx organization and beyondRepresent Onyx in technical blog posts and similar in order to aid awareness of the Onyx mission and recruitingMinimum Level of Education RequiredBachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in Data Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related disciplinePreferred Level of EducationMasters or equivalent work experience in Data Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related disciplineGSK offers a competitive compensation package inclusive of the following: Competitive base salary, annual bonus based on company performance, access to healthcare and wellbeing programs, retirement savings program, paid time off, and employee recognition programs which reward exceptional achievements.
