GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The Medical Laboratory Technician I, in their role as Testing Personnel as defined by CLIA, may perform waived and non-waived testing.

Under general supervision, the Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) I carries out all policies and performs all tests in accordance with the department’s standard operating procedures, working independently in an efficient and organized manner to assure accurate results and records. The work requires a professional level of knowledge to read and interpret accurately test results used by providers in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities as outlined by CLIA:

Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results.

Maintain records that demonstrate proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.

Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, documenting all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.

Follow established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within acceptable levels of performance.

Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and correct the problems or notify the supervisor.

Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.

If qualified, perform high complexity testing only under the onsite, direct supervision of a qualified general supervisor.

Additional responsibilities may include the following under the direction of the Technical Director and Clinical Supervisor:

Perform routine and high complexity laboratory tests and procedures on blood and other body fluids, according to laboratory policies.

Prepare samples and reagents for testing according to laboratory policies.

Responsible for the accuracy, interpretation, and reporting of all test results according to laboratory policies.

Perform routine maintenance on equipment and quality control for all reagents.

Keep accurate records of quality control, maintenance, and workload data according to laboratory policies.

Document all corrective action procedures undertaken in the Chemistry Laboratory.

Refer problems and/or unusual results to appropriate parties and document all corrective actions taken.

Perform clerical and support services as needed, including answering the telephone and monitoring pending logs.

Participate in Proficiency Testing program, including handling and analysis of Proficiency Testing material.

Communicate with hospital personnel regarding laboratory policies and procedures, laboratory utilization, and test result interpretation.

Order and maintain an appropriate level of inventory and laboratory supplies.

Keep current in developments in technical instrumentation and analytical techniques in Clinical Chemistry.

Promote the mission and vision of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and laboratories, fostering professionalism and excellence in performance among the chemistry laboratory staff.

Adhere to hospital and laboratory policies and procedures, including infection control and safety plans.

Perform any other duties as required, including general laboratory duties such as processing specimens and logging in specimens.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must possess an Associate Degree in laboratory science or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited college or university.

ASCP certification (or eligibility) required.
