GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The Director of Simulation leads the strategic and operational planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of simulation-based educational initiatives. Provides comprehensive administrative and educational leadership for the simulation center, identifying opportunities for innovation, program expansion, funding, and research. Works closely with residency and medical school leadership to deliver high-quality simulation-based education for trainees, aligned with programmatic objectives and accreditation standards.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Lead efforts in the design, implementation and instruction of programmatic offerings through the center.
Provide administrative leadership for the Department of Clinical Simulation including goal setting, planning, budgeting, equipment management and logistics.
Provide training and professional development recommendations to assist faculty in developing and maintaining knowledge of simulation equipment and best practices.
Explore and foster new creative applications of medical simulation.
Supervise the Simulation Center Manager and departmental faculty, including processes for hiring, training and performance evaluation.
Lead research efforts through the Department of Clinical Simulation, including the active solicitation of grant funding.
Assist residency programs and CMED in the evaluation of resident and medical students at all phases of training.
Provide leadership for and serve as course faculty for American Heart Association course offerings conducted through the simulation center.
Assist residency program directors to design and implement simulation-based curriculum for CMU residency programs.
Assist medical school clerkship directors to design and implement simulation-based curriculum for CMU College of Medicine clerkships.
Create an atmosphere of academic excellence and achievement, embracing our vision of state/national recognition/leadership.
Collaborate with the simulation team to partner with faculty in the integration of simulation-based education into curricula across all programs, ensuring alignment with learning objectives, best practices in simulation, and accreditation standards.
Develop and manage the simulation program budget, including forecasting expenses, allocating resources.
Foster partnerships with external organizations, industry partners, and funding agencies to enhance simulation education initiatives and secure additional resources.
Jointly with CMED Standardized Patient Center leadership, maintain and update simulation policies, procedures, and protocols in accordance with best practices and accreditation requirements.
Jointly with CMED Standardized Patient Center leadership, ensure compliance with accreditation standards related to simulation education, including coordinating site visits and preparing accreditation reports.
Perform other duties assigned to support the simulation program's overall success and to advance the organizational and academic goals.
QUALIFICATIONS:
M.D. or D.O. graduate from an accredited medical school and residency. ACLS, ATLS, BLS, PALS provider/instructor certifications preferred. Fellowship training or certificate program in simulation-based education preferred.
Licensure: Must fulfill the requirements for and obtain a faculty appointment with the applicable department of CMED.
Experience in resident and/or medical student education required. Knowledge of curriculum design, surgical procedural skills, and advanced computer skills highly desired. Experience with manikin-based simulation, partial task trainers, crisis management training, and debriefing methodologies highly desired.
