About the RoleThe Advancement Strategic Initiatives Director works as part of a team of development officers and other personnel responsible for the comprehensive fundraising efforts at The Huntington. Reporting to the Senior Vice President for Advancement, the position is responsible for managing relationships with major donor prospects from strategic constituencies locally, nationally, and internationally. An ability to work with international prospects is an asset. This position is charged with developing and implementing strategies for securing financial support from a portfolio of major donor prospects, including identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding gifts as appropriate. This position will have primary responsibility for continuing The Huntington's fundraising efforts with the Chinese, Chinese American, and other diverse communities. In addition, this position is responsible for managing complex projects, that may include building support for the Chinese and Japanese Gardens, the acquisition of Asian and Pacific Rim collections, and building The Huntington’s collection of Asian Art. Work may include creating partnerships involving multiple stakeholders for the same project.Essential Duties

Develop, coordinate and implement fundraising strategies to secure major gifts for strategic initiatives including capital, special projects, and endowment support.Develop and manage partnerships with external stakeholders that will result in increased awareness, standing, and support of The Huntington among Chinese, Chinese American and other diverse communities.As a member of the division’s senior management team, the position helps evaluate ongoing fundraising efforts as well as develop and recommend strategies to maintain high standards and consistent results. These efforts include supporting colleagues’ efforts to develop relationships with Chinese American and other diverse donor communities resulting in planned gifts, annual gifts, and corporate and foundation sponsorships.Additional Duties

Develop, prepare and present formal fundraising proposals to prospective donors.Determine whether an individual is capable of making a major gift and devise appropriate strategies to bring this individual to successful solicitation and ongoing stewardship.Make ongoing decisions on cultivation time committed vs. expected gift response, determine who needs to be involved in the relationship with the prospective donor, and decide the most effective and productive use of travel time.Facilitate/leverage new and existing relationships between program staff, individual prospects, and donors, including working with Pacific Rim Collections curator to identify, cultivate, and solicit donors for gifts-in-kind to the collections; working with Education, Chinese Garden Curatorial staff, Membership and other Huntington departments to develop and implement programs that will engage new audiences.Ensure an effective stewardship plan for each donor which is functional and systematically implemented.Responsible for following all protocols for prospect and donor management, contact reports, and any other prospect and donor reporting and monitoring.Plan and execute visits from VIPs, overseas delegation members, and other special visitors to The Huntington, including creating itineraries, drafting briefing documents for Huntington Senior Staff and curators, and leading tours as necessary.Oversee the planning and implementation of large-scale events of 1000+ attendees, such as the Mid-Autumn Moon Celebration in the Chinese garden, as well as smaller donor-focused events.Supervision of an Advancement Coordinator.Act as a spokesperson on The Huntington’s outreach efforts to Chinese communities, such as the Chinese garden, cultural events, or other programs, in coordination with the Chinese garden curator and other Huntington staff.Other duties as assigned.Candidate Requirements and Experience

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:This position requires outstanding interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills, the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, and superior organizational abilities.Must possess the ability to aggressively pursue funding leads and make connections with prospective donors.Understanding of and experience developing programs to increase diversity and inclusion.Bilingual and bicultural ability in working with Chinese communities strongly preferred.Must have proven success working under pressure to meet deadlines and must also thrive within a collaborative team-oriented environment.Must also have experience in planning, managing and evaluating programs and events. Bachelor’s degree is required.Preferred Experience

Any combination of skills and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for satisfactory job performance. Typically, a minimum of 3-6 years of experience in a fundraising setting with exposure to major gifts, campaign planning, planned giving, or similar work.Experienced senior fundraising professional with a demonstrated track record of personally closing gifts of $100k – $1M+.Solid relationship-building skills, able to interface with international prospects, program staff, administrators, board members, and trustees.Excellent communication skills, including public speaking and fundraising proposal writing.Project management expertise.Demonstrated technical proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and skill in using digital technology to manage prospect contact documentation and portfolio.A valid driver's license is required; some weekend and evening work expected.Working Conditions

Full-time position based at The Huntington.Occasional evening and weekend work may be required for events and deadlines.Support for the Advancement office as needed.Compensation & Benefits
