Business Development AssociatePOSITION SUMMARY:We have an exciting opportunity for a Business Development Associate supporting the Office of Technology Development at Scripps Research in La Jolla, California, home to some of the world's most renowned scientists. This is a great opportunity for someone to join a nimble, highly dynamic, and motivated team that drives technology transfer of a world-class research organization. The candidate will be responsible for identification of potential strategic partners and funds; facilitation of new relationships with biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, and investors across relevant Scripps Research and drug discovery/development areas; development of marketing / BD materials to facilitate outreach to prioritized partnering targets. This candidate will work with OTD leadership to lead the formation and launch of new cos, understand the market, recruit and develop the entrepreneurial team and create early-stage funding strategies.RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:Instrumental in supporting key business development and licensing activities.Develops relevant slide decks and reports, including market analyses, slide decks and confidential and non confidential materials to support business development activities.Frames the institute's scientific innovation in context of industry landscape to external stakeholders.Interfaces with investors, biopharmaceutical executives, and external business development professionals on behalf of internal stakeholders (investigators and inventors).Interact with peers across R&D, legal, and business functions to gather key information and data to drive key business development decisions.Identifies potential licensees/collaborators of technology.Initiates contact with companies/investors and markets inventions available for licensing.Distributes promotional and evaluation materials to potential licensees of technology.Conducts meetings and presentations with potential licensees, investors and sponsors of research.Negotiates related term sheet, license agreements and terms, including TSRI equity position.Assists Scripps Research entrepreneurs with company formation, connecting with funds, identifying the entrepreneurial team and business case.Maintains running database of historical/comparable licensing terms and transaction details.Researches industry landscape, potential partners, relevant technologies, historical/comparable terms & transactions.Tracks outreach efforts, manages calendars, and correspondence.Generates and maintains internal dashboards as intuitive and real-time progress report.Details of established essential functions for this position will be addressed/discussed during the interview process.REQUIREMENTS:Bachelor's Degree in a life sciences-related field (e.g., biology, chemistry, biomedical engineering) or business.Minimum 3-5 years of business development or licensing experience in one of the following (or related fields):Life science venture capital, investment banking, or equity research.Relevant BD / commercial functions within biotechnology or pharmaceutical companies.Technology transfer and commercialization.Prior successful licensing and BD experience is preferred, preference will be given to candidates with an existing deal sheet.Strong technical and analytical skills that are requisite for market sizing across therapeutics, devices, diagnostics, software space.Experience with financial analysis, forecasting, and market segmentation.Excellent marketing and business skills.Excellent negotiation and deal making experience.Basic understanding of drug discovery / development and regulatory approval processes.Familiarity with intellectual property and licensing matters.Willingness to work across diverse therapeutic areas and modalities.A self-starter with a high degree of intellectual curiosity.Self-reliance and a positive attitude towards collaborative work.Adaptable to a fast-paced, high-performing, matrixed environment.A multitasker that adapts to shifting priorities.Ability to take direction, remain detail-oriented and highly organized.High proficiency in Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel, BioRender, Global Data, Cortellis, and Canvas.This is an on-campus position requiring 4 days per week working onsite from our La Jolla campus.COMPENSATION:The expected hiring range for this position is $103,700 to $126,100/annually, commensurate with experience.
