Chief Purpose of this position:VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center seeks candidates for the Associate Director for Community Outreach & Engagement to provide leadership and direction with other members of the senior leadership team for the Center, comprising the Executive Committee for the Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center (Massey) in the furtherance of the mission to reduce the state cancer burden for all Virginians by addressing the confluence between biological, social, and policy drivers through high-impact, cutting-edge research; person-centered care across the continuum, from prevention through survivorship; community integration; and training the next generation of community-centric researchers and health care professionals. The Associate Director for Community Outreach & Engagement is charged with coordinating all community engagement activities of the Cancer Center. This includes collaborating closely with community partners, Massey members, Cancer Community Connection Coalition, the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and the Office of Cancer Research Training and Education Coordination. The Associate Director for Community Outreach and Engagement is responsible for identifying opportunities for strategic growth and development based on Massey’s strategic plan.

Position Responsibilities:

Oversee the Office of Community Outreach and Engagement and its activities. This includes the mandate of the office to continuously monitor the cancer burden within the catchment area.

Participate in the strategic planning and recruitment activities for Massey.

Lead assessments of the cancer burden and communicate data and priority focal areas regarding the cancer burden to investigators, community members, and public policy advocates.

Develop and monitor strategies to maximize community engagement particularly with individuals from medically underserved or underrepresented populations in research.

Lead cancer care navigation and evidenced-based education interventions.

Meet with Massey Program Leaders (Developmental Therapeutic, Cancer Biology and Cancer Prevention and Control) to foster inter-programmatic collaboration, especially across disciplines. This includes providing guidance in the formulation of scientific objectives and goals that are pertinent to the priorities of the catchment area. Facilitate communication and collaboration between these programs.

Promote the development of catchment area-focused, cancer disparities, and community-engaged research across all three Massey research programs.

Interface with Massey’s Office of Cancer Research Training and Education Coordination and the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to align their inter-related activities.

Implement strategies, goals and metrics to complete Community Outreach and Engagement pillar as defined by Massey’s strategic plan.

Facilitate community education within the catchment area. This includes working with the Massey Marketing and Communications unit.

Meet with the Associate Director for Global Oncology on promoting initiatives relevant to Massey members and the strategic plan.

Required Qualifications:

PhD, MD/PhD or equivalent

Academic appointment with tenure, or tenure-track position

Extensive cancer relevant research experience

Proven extramural funding track record

Extensive publication experience

Proven community engagement and participatory research activities

Experience working with underserved communities and community-based organizations

Experience in, and coordination of, collaborative grants and managing trans-disciplinary research

Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working as a leader within an NCI designated cancer center

Proven extramural funding track record (NCI peer-reviewed grants)
