Position Summary:

The Director of Wine is responsible for overseeing the wine department, including product selection, inventory management, staff training, and customer service. This role requires a deep knowledge of wines, strong leadership skills, and the ability to drive sales while maintaining high standards of quality and customer satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities:

Product Selection and Inventory Management:

Curate a diverse and high-quality selection of wines from various regions.

Negotiate with suppliers and manage vendor relationships to secure favorable terms and exclusive offerings.

Establish and maintain relationships with wine distributors, producers, and suppliers to ensure a reliable source of quality wines.

Monitor inventory levels and ensure optimal stock to meet customer demand.

Oversee the organization and display of wine products to maximize visual appeal and sales.

Sales and Customer Service:

Develop and implement sales strategies to achieve revenue targets and increase market share.

Provide exceptional customer service by assisting customers with wine selections and offering expert advice.

Organize and host wine tastings, events, and promotions to engage customers and enhance their shopping experience.

Stay updated on industry trends and customer preferences to ensure the store’s wine selection remains competitive.

Staff Training and Development:

Recruit, train, and mentor wine department staff to ensure knowledgeable and motivated team members.

Conduct regular training sessions on wine knowledge, sales techniques, and customer service best practices.

Foster a positive and collaborative work environment that encourages team members to excel.

Operational Excellence:

Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements related to the sale and handling of wine.

Implement and maintain effective processes for inventory control, loss prevention, and merchandising.

Collaborate with the marketing team to develop promotional materials and campaigns.

Prepare regular reports on sales performance, inventory levels, and market trends for senior management.

Set prices for the wines to maximize profitability, understanding cost of goods and profit margins.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Wine Studies, Business Administration, Hospitality Management, or a related field preferred.

Certified Sommelier, WSET Level 3, CSW, or equivalent wine certification highly desirable.

Minimum of 5 years of experience in wine retail, hospitality, or a related field, with at least 2 years in a leadership role.

Extensive knowledge of wine regions, varieties, production methods, and trends.

Strong negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Proven ability to manage inventory, analyze sales data, and develop effective sales strategies.

Passion for wine and a commitment to delivering exceptional customer experiences.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and retail management software.
